Default Confused by motor specs (yeah, that again)

So I've bought (or at least pre-ordered) an XV01. Quite excited. Only hope I'll be able to build it before the frosty weather goes.

Anyway, plan is to initially use the included motor with a 1080 ESC on 2S. I have no doubt though that I'll want to go faster later on.

Options would be:

Faster brushed motor: As far as I previously understood from my crawlers, brushed motors basically get faster the lower the number of Turns. Caveate being 5 slot where, for example, a ~15T 5 slot is equivalent to a ~30T 3 slot. Thing is that I don't know the number of turns on the standard motor. I've also read that the Tamiya super stock 23T is faster. I was thinking of using my old 12T motor from a 1/10th buggy. Is that going to be faster than the super stock? Any guidance gratefully received.

Sensorless Brushless: I have a spare Max10 ESC so could use that but I don't see many people running sensorless in the XV01. Am I right there? If sensorless would even work, does anyone know if the Hobbywing motor (3652 for example) would fit? I'm guessing 3000kv would be about right.

Sensored Brushless: Getting fancy here, no idea if it's needed or where to start looking.

Inclination is to keep it simple and run a nice brushed system to get low speed control and torque but maybe I'll find that gets to feel a bit too slow once I get used to the car.

Sorry for noob questions.

I understand that 3000kv is the sweet spot for a stock xv01. Thats 22000 odd rpm on 2s. A 21t 3slot will be slightly slower on paper. A 5slot 11t will be even slower.

I’ll try a basic 17t or 21t 3slot as it seems that will give you the best top speed thats still controllable.

Thanks for that. Done a bit more reading and, as far as I can tell, the stock 540 is 27T so my existing 12T may be a bit wild.

That said, I've read a lot of posts where people say a 13.5T sensored brushless is really good.

Sorry for the noob question but, is there a difference between a ~13.5T sensored brushless and a ~13T brushed in terms of output RPM?

Thanks.

You will gain more efficiency with brushless and it will equate to more rpm.

I under-estimated and got a Surpass sensored 21.5T. I run 3s exclusively and I still think I should have gone a bit faster. I'll probably go to a 13.5T and gear it down a little on my next iteration.

Useful info, thanks.

Sounds like a 13.5T sensored brushless should be slightly faster than a 13T brushed on account of efficiency.

With a lot of people saying 13.5T is a sweet spot (on 2S with standard gearing) and factoring in my poor driving it look like a 15-17T brushed on 2S should do the trick nicely. I can always try out my 12T is I find it too slow.

Possibly an HPI firestorm 15T or similar.

Cheers
