Default More Nationals Travel info.

As of right now we have competitors coming from 13 different states to compete, so I figured I would through this thread together to help everyone with their travel plans.

Flying into the event.
  • If you want to fly to the event the closest small airport would be in Grand Junction, CO it may be hard to get a flight into though. The drive from Grand Junction to Moab would then be 113 miles.
  • The next airport would be Salt Lake City, UT which is a major airport and should be easy to get a flight to. The drive from Salt Lake City to Moab would then be 234 miles.
  • Your next choice would be to fly into Denver, also a major airport that would be easy to fly into. The drive from Denver to Moab goes all the way across the Rocky Mountains and is beautiful, beware though, if you are a flatlander, even though the drive is all 4 lane freeway they are very twisty mountain roads with several steep passes. The drive from Denver to Moab would then be 355 miles.


Lodging

The actual event site is located 13 miles south of town, so you would be best to stay on the south end of town. Camping at the event site is not permitted.


Moab Campgrounds
This event site is in a remote location, easliy accessible by a 2wd vehicle. No food, water, restrooms, or electricity will be available. Please pack accordingly. Also the town of Moab has no hobby shops so bring whatever parts you may need with you.

Tips for taking your RC's on the plane

I have made several trips taking my RC Crawler on the plane, so here are some tips.

Most airlines allow only 2x Carry-On items (Usually a small suite case and a personal item something like a back-pack or gym bag)


Carry-on Baggage
Weighs less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Does not exceed 45 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
Fits easily into our SizeWiseŽ unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fits in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.


Checked Baggage
You can check two bags per passenger free of charge.
Each bag must:
Weigh 50 pounds (22.5 kg) or less.
Not exceed 62 inches when you total length plus width plus height.


I was able to get my 2.2 Class crawler and it radio into a backpack after removing the body and tires. The body I stuck in the check bag with clothes stuff around it. I stuck the tires loose into the back pack for cushioning.

The Super Class crawler fit into my carry-on luggage, but had to remove axles from the links in addition to the body and tires being removed. Again everything except the body fit into 1x bag.

Any tools should be put into the checked bag because the TSA could possibly declare them as a weapon, and allow extra time for them to search your bags! I have about a 50% average on the RC's being searched.

Watch the weight of all your bags because they do check it. Trust me nothing sucks worse than repacking your bags in the middle of the airport.

Most of my experience is on Delta, so check your airlines website to be sure

Good info guys. As one of the few Oregonians(ORCRC members) that are currently signed up, we have been discussing our travel methods and more info noted, the better.

I think all Nationals information should be either in a sticky or setup in it's own mini-forum. I hate having to search for the threads after not reading the board for a couple days

If I'm lucky enough to get registered for both classes I'm considering mailing both of my rigs and support equipment out a few days in advance to avoid the hassles of lugging 50+ pounds of acid based batterys and sharp weapon like tools onto a plane.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Found this online.

Southeast Utah is part of the Colorado Plateau, a "high desert" region that experiences wide temperature fluctuations, sometimes over 40 degrees in a single day. The temperate (and most popular) seasons are spring (April through May) and fall (mid-September through October), when daytime highs average 15 - 25 degrees C (60 to 80 F) and lows average -1 - 10 degrees C (30 to 50 F).

Plan on it being warm/hot (75*-100*) during the day and nice and cool in the evenig (50*-75*). Just plan on being baked during the day time.

And expensive! I'm meeting Joey and Kenny in Memphis and hitching a ride with them. If Joey's diesel gets similiar mileage to mine, we should average 18-20 MPG. Split 3 ways, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Got 16.5 pulling the pop-up running 75-85 going out there in May. Need to send the chip off for a reprogram then it would get 18-20 again. Should get alittle better not pulling.

I am not origanily from WA, but I have lived here for 18 years now and I laugh when the natives think it is hot at 80*

I like warm weather and have been to the SW and love it.

sounds like a bunch of us here in denver are heading out on early friday morning to cross the rockies. I'll be driving a blue Z71 silverado with rccrawler.com on the back window... hope to see more local boys heading that way.

The MTRCRC crew will be rollin the Cummins diesel, leaving about 3 on friday, should be in moab around 9. Gotta pick up the idaho and logan guys. Should be 5 of us total.
