I have both, the 7950 is faster and plenty of torque even on a cast axled rig. I'm running the 7980 on my light weight comp crawler and have it set at 8.4V as well. it's really tough but it's also a bit larger. I love either one but the 7950 is easier to mount. If I ever need a new one I'll probably get another 7950.

I just switched from a 7955TG to a 7950HS (the 7955 went into my 1.9 MRC.....). Very happy thus far @ 7.4 volts. I can always crank it up some if needed...

I go direct to the servo. I made a "bridge" that allows the servo plug to connect to the BEC plug (signal wire removed from servo side & plugged into the RX using a Futaba plug housing for support).
Since there is no soldering, it makes it easier to swap servo's if need be.

Using a CastleLink, you can set the CC BEC voltage to almost anything......keep in mind that a voltage setting greater than listed for the servo may shorten it's life.......
