Default Ideal comp wheelbase?

I know the max limit is 12.5" but what is the ideal length wheelbase? Do I need to get as close as possible to 12.5" without going over, or is a shorter wheelbase better?

as usual rr with his clear and concise answers

as in most instances the correct answer is different for each driver/vehicle combination.
go out to the rocks and try different lengths until you can go over the obstacle of the day
then go out the next day and see if you can still go over the same rock with the same
wheelbase. if you can, then pray that the competition you go to has the same rock.

the 12.5 dimension for the comps is an equalizer for all drivers, a "common ground" so to speak
nothing to do with what is best. my rs10 works best at 13.5

there is a formula to compute the optimum wheelbase for a crawler, it takes into account
such things as ....

I was as clear as it gets he asked if 12.5" was better than being short, nothing over 12.5" matters if your going to comp, otherwise yeah going longer will prob help.

Long posts aren't always better...

dont get me wrong ....
i enjoy your answers, one has to think to fully apreciate them

the problem lies in the asking, the clearer the question the more obvious the answer

I like a 13" wheelbase on my wraith. Seems to be the best cross between climbs and being hung up on things. But what is this "comp" thing you speak of? Is it kind of like a cassette tape or a great president? Something we used to have, but not anymore.

don't compete, just build and test for fun
im stuck in a wheelchair and cant go climb over the rocks anymore.
I test the crawlers on stairs and rocks in the back yard.

I thank you all for sharing your experiences here on the forum.
it is like being out there with you on the rocksl

The thing is...comp courses are often set up with hangs and climbs that require that 12.5....and if you dont have it you wont make it through the gate or to the gate. Most comps Ive gone to dont have a secondary line that you can take around to the same desired point either...the idea is to make you better by making you go one way through the course.
