Default slop in the tranny

Does anyone have a lot of slop in the tranny? When climbing and you let off the throttle the truck rolls back about 1/4" and when looking at it with the body off its slop in the tranny. I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of the slop or just something you have to live with

Thanks in advance

It's not slop, it's a characteristic of having a gear shift clutch. All RC 2/3 speed transmissions have this characteristic. It is also the reason why you can shift whilst on the throttle.

Yeh once you take the transmission apart it becomes quite clear why that movement exists.
Without you'd never get to change gear. Its worth taking apart just to see the engineering of it!

I have another question - sometimes it is not possible to shift, have to drive it to find the "spot" where the shifting rod can move freely. Normal too?

Picture the 2 gears 1 inch apart on the same shaft. On the face of those 2 gears is a slot broken into 3 sections. When you change gear it moves a sliding pin into one of those slots on either gear. To ensure it finds a slot you need to be moving or you could possibly just strike the pin onto the gear face between the slots.

Anyway whilst on the subject. Once the pin is in one of those 3 slots that play or slop you all know of is the pin moving from one end of the slot its in to the other.

If it wasn't a slot system and just a hole for the pin to find and engage you'd never really get into gear. Plus it would chip away at it and brake.
