Default Screws (stock) rusted bad on first run... pics

This one baffles me.

I'm absolutely in love with the TF2, have one as a shelf queen for a couple of years and recently now just built this one for actual use.

It was a (new) kit and I meticulously put it together, using thread lock every place needed (yes, probably irrelevant for this issue).

Took it out after the first run (less than 2 hrs, not even wasting half a 5K pack) the screws rusted. The couple of puddles I went through were moderate at most (not even deep enough to touch the bottom of the wheel).

Yet all of this happened.

Thoughts?

(these steering link rod screws have rusted the worst of the bunch, and happened almost immediately)

Stock kit screws do rust quickly.
Get a Stainless Hardware Kit From KNK.

Yes, it's true the stock screws, even though they are coated, will and do rust. Are you located around an area with a large body of salt water? If so, just the humidity in the air, if you are in such an area, could cause the rust to advance more rapidly. Goes for the same in an area that may use salt to de-ice certain areas as well. Mine took a while, but did rust up a bit. I'll be switching to stainless when I do an over haul in the future.

Hi, good thoughts. Yes, I do live in San Diego and some days the Pacific is so salty, you can even smell it in the air. I never thought it'd be a big concern because it's no issue to cars and trucks out here. Also, my axial gear was unaffected.

I'm going to have to order the stainless screws from above.

I just have never experienced anything rusting so quickly and rapidly. Not even fish hooks.

The hardware is good quality, it's just that they are carbon steel bolts, so exposure to salt water will easily do that. Your only option is stainless steel. Axial hardware is cheap but they have some kind of finish on them that holds up to weather a little better.

I love the people and the help I get here too. Some serious knowledge. The only thing I don't like is how the mods censor so much. I've had complete threads outright deleted this week on this site just because of a response may not have represented an advertiser too favorably. Like "poof" the entire thread is gone as if it never occurred.

Ok, the Stainless screws came in. Bag shows as 247 pieces. No idea if this is enough for the entire kit. I hope it replaces every screw. This entire truck has rusted lol. Less than two months old.

How did those screws work out for ya? I may pick up a bag in the near future. Mine hasn't rusted but it hasnt been wet yet either. I just now got my truck waterproof.

Funny that you ask... I just now got the time to start the transformation this morning. So far I got the complete front axle swapped out and re-greased while I was at it.

I like the screws. They appear to be exactly like the screws I get from Ace hardware when I did my custom build.

$20 for a complete organized kit for the TF2 is a good deal. I love little ma' pa' type American shops like this Team knk place. Will be giving Team knk a good yelp review.

Although I haven't, and probably won't, count... I will be surprised if the kit contains exactly 247 screws without error.

I initially probably would have been opposed to putting stainless screws on black axles and frame, but seeing how quick and ugly they rusted, the two tone doesn't bother me too much.

Pics coming soon. And a big thanks to the member who recommended this company above.

Update:

Ok, Most every screw came out without too much fuss. I went raw, no WD or PB. There was one screw that stripped the head before it would budge and it broke, then another fused to the rod-end completely (actually two). So three screws died coming out.

Otherwise, this is what we have. The off-color isn't too bad I guess:

Who'd have known salt water was this salty.... guess I should have paid more attention in Chem class.

That's a bummer. I'm sure that was a lot of work to swap out all those screws, but they do look good IMO.

So far so good. I haven't had a chance yet to take it back to the beach, but that is the main spot I go so I need them to not rust. Let's see what those stainless steel screws are made of.

One thing I still don't understand is why the axial hardware (carbon) hadn't rusted a bit. Weird.

I do recommend one thing, however. You guys need to advertise somehow so builders can incorporate your hardware kit into the build from day one.

I will certainly be buying more TF2s and will be adding this kit to each.

Update:

Went back to the ocean shore a week ago and crawled for hours. Got splashed by tons of waves and so far, no rust on the stainless screws. It's my favorite spot so I'll frequent the place, so this is important.

+1 to KNK
