RC4WD 4Runner build 8 Attachment(s) Love me them 4runners!! Time to start putting together my first rc4wd 4runner kit. First thing is chassis assembly. I had more pictures of the assembly but my iphone seemly ate them.. grrrr. Marlin Crawler chassis, axles, springs, all from ebay. Old man emu 90mm shocks front and rear. Attachment 378646 Attachment 378649 Attachment 378650 Attachment 378651 Installed angle shims to help with the driveline angles for the GDS driveshafts. I really like these drive shafts over anything else. The spline on these shafts slides really well with the six tooth geometry vs shafts like the JunFac spline, which seem to bind really bad and don't slide under load. Realistically probably not a noticeable difference but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Attachment 378647 Attachment 378648 R4 scale transmission with a bit of a custom mount for the back of the tranny and transfer case. Took the electronics plate and cut it up and drilled new holes for mounting the back half of the transmission and transfer case. Good low cog and scale fitment. Gives me a good platform for the build, however, Things are likely to change! Attachment 378652 Attachment 378653 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 3 Attachment(s) Found this Bobbed 4runner in the local seattle craigslist and decided I had to have one.. scale stlye of course. I have also seen the bobbed 4runner that noob built for the rc4wd giveaway, which turned out pretty much amazing as usual for noober but between the two pretty much locked in my goal for this build. Attachment 378654 Attachment 378655 Attachment 378656 if your looking for a bobbed 85 4runner https://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/c...802495630.html |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 6 Attachment(s) After looking at the body it was pretty easy to see where and what was going to get chopped out. Keeping the gate hinge mounting and the line of the fenders intact made sense, as well as the canopy. Also the canopy pins were all able to be reused. The cut ended up being the exact width of the 24mm scotch blue tape on hand. perfect. Attachment 378657 Attachment 378658 Then I laid down a strip of blue on either side and began to chop with the 4" grinder. Grinder makes quick work of it all. Attachment 378659 Attachment 378660 Attachment 378661 Back together with some plastic cement. Attachment 378662 |

Re: RC4WD 4Runner build Body looks great man! Good job on the bob. That t case is begging to be positioned to overdrive the front and line the drive shafts up! |

Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 2 Attachment(s) Got some styrene gussets installed in the bed and on the canopy. Attachment 378668 Attachment 378669 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 5 Attachment(s) Hood hinges are definitely the worst thing about this body. Hood doesn't really stay back in place when its down and then it only opens up about 1" and change.. Attachment 378670 Attachment 378671 Took some airplane hinges and did a bit of trimming and got it all fixered up. Just a bit more trimming and adjustment and it will be perfect. Attachment 378672 Attachment 378673 Attachment 378674 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 1 Attachment(s) A little adjustment and trimming and squeaked a little bit more out of it with plenty of clearance on top. "thumbsup" Attachment 378675 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 6 Attachment(s) Got a little bit more done after spending plenty of time shoveling... and playing in the snow with my 84 4runner! Braaapp! Did a bit of body filling and sanding with 320 and got it pretty smooth. Also sanded out most of the mold lines. Attachment 378950 Attachment 378951 Got some primer on to see where I'm at with it. Attachment 378952 Looks pretty good, not much to go. I missed a couple of mold lines and I'll hit the primer with some 600 grit that is good enough! Looking good. Attachment 378953 Attachment 378954 Attachment 378955 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build Looks awesome man! You nailed that bob job :ror:"thumbsup" any ideas on color yet? |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 6 Attachment(s) Thanks, I've got this can of rustoleum oil rubbed bronze lying around that would look pretty bad ass. Its not what it sounds like, aka drapery hardware, it actually a nice dark charcoal metallic. Then flat black for the topper and grey interior. "thumbsup" Got the back cover piece in and decided to go ahead and fill in the gap and clean it up. Attachment 378965 Then got a bunch of other parts cleaned up and ready for paint. Going to use the bumper and valance but cut the valance down to look like the 84 2wd pickup. They always looked better than the 4wd toothed version. I actually used one on my blue 84 8) Then glued some small carbon rod on the backside to reinforce it so it doesn't break.. right away. Attachment 378966 Attachment 378967 Attachment 378968 Going to make a deeper floor pan and make some panels to cover the openings under the seats. Attachment 378969 Decided not to use the funky mounting pins and bracket that the kit comes with and super glued some carbon rod on the backside of the bottom door frame for reinforcement. Drilled it out and dripped some glue in the holes. Attachment 378970 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 3 Attachment(s) Heres the spray can, the test that i did looked killer. Attachment 378996 Also trimmed the rear fenders back for tire clearance. Actually looks better too. Before Attachment 378997 After Attachment 378998 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 2 Attachment(s) OK, so I sprayed the valance with the oil rubbed bronze paint and it has way too much brown and gold in it. Back to Ace to find another can of the black midnight metallic that I had that was almost empty. Had just enough to confirm it was what i needed. Also got the new floor pans roughed in and started some filling and sanding. Attachment 378999 Attachment 379000 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 5 Attachment(s) Got some paint laid down today and I couldn't help myself but to put some pieces in place to see what its going to look like. I'm lovin it! Lots more to go, including a clear coat for extra chip protection. It will go together fast after that. "thumbsup" I'm thinking this project should get brushless power cuz it needs to rip as kick ass as much as it looks bad ass ! 8) Attachment 379011 Attachment 379012 Attachment 379013 Attachment 379014 Attachment 379015 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 1 Attachment(s) Wet sanded the body this morning with 1200 grit to get most of the orange peel out before clear coat. The rustoleum metallic actually laid down really nice. Going to use 2k automotive grade clear coat. Its extremely durable and lays down super smooth. Ive got a good feeling about this! Attachment 379025 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 8 Attachment(s) Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty :) Attachment 379109 Attachment 379110 Attachment 379111 Attachment 379112 Attachment 379113 Attachment 379114 Attachment 379115 Attachment 379116 Lets see how it looks with some chrome wheels 8) |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 4 Attachment(s) Thanks man, check out these pics with some alloys. 8) Attachment 379118 Attachment 379119 Attachment 379120 Attachment 379121 |
Re: RC4WD 4Runner build 2 Attachment(s) I'm diggin it, let me know what you guys think. Ive got more to go. need to do more detailing. Also thinking some kind of dual exhaust from a supercharged 3.4L 8) Attachment 379122 Attachment 379123 |
