Default T-T-T-T-Too Rad For you

een a minute since I have done a build thread, but I'm so stoked with the way this is coming out I figured I would share it. As many of you know, I am a huge Toyota fan, was a tech and own several full size Toyotas from and AE86 to a 85 PU on 37s with an Exo. Probably all time favorite era of vehicles though is the 80s 90s show trucks, or "jamboree trucks" as some refer to them...you know the kind, no smaller then 38.5" tire, multiple shocks for absolutely no reason, heart beat stripes, pink and chrome stuff etc. Building an 80/90s show truck has been on my bucket list for a while so when I received the new RC4WD Xtra Cab Toyota I knew exactly what had to be done...

The tuck out the box was sitting up high with pizza cutters for tires...so if you know what TOYOTA stands for I immediately rectified that problem

Ahh yes that's better, nothing says show truck like Champ 500s and Thornbirds

I then came across this 4Runner which served for some inspiration...

I dug into my stash for vintage decals and emerged with this Autographics set. After some trial error...faded decals and not looking at the orientation of the stripe, I finally got the decals nailed down.

I then started on the details... double front shock mount made to mount 3, bug shield, ladder bars, 6 rear shocks, blue shock boots, vintage Kyosho Big Brute nerf bars

Probably my favorite new thing I've obtained is a Cricut machine, I made the OAKLEY windshield decal, bug shield decals and others, such an awesome tool to have.

No 80s/90s show truck would be complete though without a tilt bed, I used parts from a Tamiya High Lift chassis which made for an easy modification. In the end it will be servo operated and if I have the time before USTE it will tilt back and dip to one side as well.

The KCs that came on this are much of the newer age LED style, so a trip on to ebay for some china specials was necessary. I then painted them pink and using the Cricut machine cut out KC logos for them. Needless to say 4 lights wasnt going to cut it so I went with 6 forward facing and 2 rear facing.

Peep that No Fear sticker haha....

having grown up around show trucks I always like when they did bed rug kits so once again I fired up the Cricut machine and did a Toyota Logo in to the self stick felt and lined the whole bed.

I was told the Toyota logo didnt appear till the 90s but lets face it, rome wasnt built in a day so I think its still cool

No Toyota show truck would also be complete without some more pow pow under the hood, we all know the 22r dont like to push the factory size tires so in order to move the 44' Ground Hawgs an SBC and scale drive line seemed appropriate.

I then stumbled upon a dude on facebook who makes the best looking RC wheels I have ever seen and he just so happens to make Weld Stone Crushers so needless to say Too Rad got an upgrade

Thanks for checking out the build so far! More coming shortly

-Mike

This is thing absolutely IS rad. I remember seeing this style everywhere from the fairgrounds to covering the sand dunes on holiday weekends growing up. Our neighbor even had one...on 38" Groundhawgs with bright red paint and lots of blue and yellow detail work.

Thanks for refreshing the memories!

Where's my Lightning Bolt tank top, Vuarnet Cat Eye shades, Zoom Cavaricci trousers, and my espadrilles!

I'm goin' off base for the weekend to Palm Springs, to cruise for girls...

MAN, this takes me back!

(all I had was a Honda Elite 80 scooter at the time as a young Marine - but in my dreams I had that truck!)

I certainly hope you are sending this one to RC4WD, RC Car Action, and everywhere else you can think of!

Killer build, indeed...

Got to work on the truck a little bit last night, I wanted to add a dual steering stablizer to the front of the axle. This became quite the task as trying to find the correct length shocks was an issue. I ended up using 70mm RC4WD shocks but I had to modify them. I took off the lower cap, and cut that threaded portion off. They no longer hold oil and the shaft now has some wiggle but with the boots in place you wont notice it. I did find that gluing the plastic seal spacer into the bottom gave it more support so I would recommend that. I then repurposed a High lift aluminum transmission skid and made the lower mount. This one is the 3rd attempt and there will be a 4th in the end. I then used Yota axle U bolt kit to mount it to the axle. I used a sanding drum on the mount to have it contour to the axle better.

I tossed the body back on to see how it looks with the new Weld wheel and leaf perch flip. I ended up using an RC4WD prototype front mount before they finalized their shackle flip. This gave me the correct axle position (dead center of well) as im trying to have the least amount of tire rub.

I also added chrome cladding to the body via some high quality chrome vinyl, this was a popular thing for the era and I am swapping the grill next for a chrome one with chrome bumper and chrome valance. Tossed some on the centers of the nerf to give it the chrome plate look.

There is still lots left to do and USTE will be here before I know it...

future plans are:
Finish engine, will have RE edelbrock kit installed
Modify 22RE engine bay, remove the 4 banger part but allow for rest so engine ebay will have appropriate details
Interior, waiting on CChand kicker boxes to arrive, also have 2 smaller real speakers I am going to felt and wire up a blue tooth system so itll play music, felt door panels with blue and pink, flock front and rear seats and felt or flock flooring.
Paint...lots to paint...blue axles, pink knuckles, blue chassis, pink perches, sand old rash out of ladder bars and paint blue
More KCs
More old schoolness
much to do
such show truck
