Need some insight on 3s lipo's in a TF2

Currently I am running 4000/5200mah 2s lipos, positioned 90* from the original battery location using an Axial battery plate. I feel having the battery down the middle is better for the COG.

Now that I've done the axle flip, the A&M skidplate becomes an issue. So I am wanting to raise the transfer case up, and ditch the skidplate. Problem is, the length of the current 2s batteries don't give me enough room to do that. I may also wind up having to raise the transmission and motor up with it, but that's not an issue as 2 plates can handle that quite easily on the transmission mounts, though I could probably get a short shaft with universal joints to avoid having to raise the transmission with the transfer case.

So now my question.
I'm looking to move up to shorter 3s lipo batteries, In theory, running a smaller 3s lipo (say 3000mah), should get increased runtimes as compared to a 4000mah 2s lipo. More power, less load.

Does this transfer over in practice? AKA does it actually increase/match your runtimes as compared to a 2s lipo?

Reason I ask, is then I can downsize on the capacity, and size of the physical packs, in order to make room to raise the transfer case.

What is your experience on 2s vs 3s lipos in a TF2?

Anyone have any input?

I won't be running 3s for speed, but using it for the increased runtime.

Just looking for some other opinions.

i run 3s on my tf2 with a 2 speed with no problems... if its too hot (temp and speed) gear down. my tf2 is running an hh torque master 27 paired with a 1080 ... my go to battery has been a 3s tattu 1300 ma. no heat issues and is plenty fast on 2nd gear. I dont run for a long time but there has been occasions when this set up has given me more than half hour with some juice still on the 1300 ma.

It works for any crawler/trail truck... If you gear down a bit you'll get a more efficient system, smoother running, and same or more runtime. The amount of energy in a battery is calculated C*V*s (capacity, voltage, # of cells) so a 4Ah*4.2V*2 contains 33.6Wh (watt-hours) of energy, same as a ~2700mAh 3s.

Appreciate the replies.

Just feeling this out. While I'm sure running a 3s should net longer run times, sometimes theory doesn't match practice, so figured I'd ask for some opinions and experiences.

Yes it does. I've recently switched over to mostly 3S in my TRX4's since they are so heavy and the difference in runtime is very noticeable.

To close this out, I can confirm longer runtimes on my setup with a smaller 3s vs larger 2s.

Yes, 3S in all crawlers for me for years now, glad you tried it and liked it. Geared properly, it crawls great and still has wheel speed when you need it. My TF2 is still running the stock sealed can motor (iirc stock gearing), Hobbywing 1080, and ProTek RC 3S 130C Low IR Si-Graphene + HV Shorty LiPo Battery (11.4V/4800mAh) Crawler Pack w/T-Style Plug (but I swap out connector for XT60 in all crawlers).

Is there another thread here with your TF2 build? Oops, just found it lol. Good job on your build! :)
