| RECON "Rock Park" write up & pics
The R.E.C.O.N. Rubber-2-Rock Series is a true winter series. That means regardless of weather conditions, RECON comps. Part of the challenge of a winter series is dealing with the adverse weather conditions. Whether it’s water proofing your electronics or just dealing with layer upon layer of clothing, competing in the winter takes more effort to do, but is it worth it. Saturdays, comp had snowy conditions a saw a high of 23, but that did not keep some hardcore r/c crawlers off the rocks. I knew the pass was closed and we did not see the dominating drivers of the Back Yard Boys r/c Club, but having the luxury of dropping 3 low scores out of 10, the BYB Crew are still in the hunt for Nevada’s National Invites. With weather conditions cold and snowy, safety was a big concern so with the sun rising a one hour weather delay allowed the sun to melt the snow from the rocks. With drivers anxiously awaiting drivers meeting and in the comfort of the heated Axial Tent, drivers, for the first time, got briefed on the Course 1 (C-1) lap format and the rest of the comp day details. Course 1 was a 2 lap, 10 gates with bonus line, and 6 minutes of r/c crawling bliss. Drivers started with a tire in the start circle, and then they drove across 20 feet of grass to 9 technical gates in big rock with huge holes that would swallow a crawler quick, fast, and in a hurry. If that wasn’t enough, after gate 8 was a bonus line to gate 9 that featured several big step ups to gate 9. Once a driver cleared nine, there was a mote of snow and rock to cross back to another 20 foot section of grass. After the driver crossed the grass, they entered a 30 foot boundary section of rip rap; where boulders ranged from 4-5 inches in size to basketball size in diameter. At the end of the boundary section was gate 10, on the first lap, the driver crossed gate ten, drove over the start circle to reset their 40 points and did another lap. So with several different lines in the big rock and several different lines thru the rip rap, this was going to get real interesting; real quick. A driver had 40 points per lap, but only 6 mins to complete the 2 lap course. If a driver timed out or pointed out on lap one, he/she scored the progression on lap 1 and a 40 on lap 2. If a driver completed lap 1, but timed out or pointed out on lap 2, then they received a course 1 score and progression on lap 2. Completing both laps, netted a driver 2 scores and a helluva comp experience! Course 2 was a standard RECON course with 10 gates and a bonus line for both classes, but lines set close to the river did not play well on the nerves of the drivers, especially since big chunks of ice were floating down the river and no one was eager to jump in to save a crawler. This did not stop the Nevada State Sport Champion Nick Jackson from setting the low score of the day in the sport class. Nor did it stop 2.2 Pro Jeremy Clark from setting the low C-2 score for the pro’s. Course 3 featured 10 gates in 6 minutes with an extended course. An extended course allows a driver who completes the main 10 gate course the chance to drive another 10 gate course to drive in 4 minutes. For the drivers that did not finish the course, they receive a 40 for the extended course. There was quite the showdown in the 1.9 class. Arcain41 is on a pure terror with his lil Novak powered BJ. To say that he is dominating the 1.9 class is putting it lightly, but that does not stop the rest of the field from trying to disrupt his win streak. Good luck Arcain41, the target on your back would make weaker drivers fold in half, but you can handle it with grace and poise. Hunter laid down some of the sickest 1.9 courses I’ve ever ran and his dedication to the 1.9 class is second to none. The day was a great experience and with a cozy turn out, we were all able to run together from course to course. The sport drivers ran first and it was fun to watch the talent level in this class. Not only was it nice to run with the other pros, but it was also nice to see pros who are confident in their crawling game that jump at the chance to run first. Getting virgin rock and having the ability to set the standard says a lot about a driver’s character. The weather played havoc with some rigs and with driver’s patience. One driver succumbed to the conditions and was placed on probation for displaying unsportsmanlike conduct. RECON could not bring drivers one of the most extensive and competitive schedule without the help of our allies. Thank you Axial Racing, Vanquish Products, TCS, Pit Bull Tires, T1E, HC&M Hobbies, and of course the RECON Volunteers; Chasinbaja, lil’ Romeo, Hunter, and Spucknit. These guys are the backbone of every comp and I am proud of their selfless, thankless effort that they put forth at every event. RECON looks forward to seeing everyone at round 7 & 8. That’s right, a double header to crown a Maniac of the Moon Rocks Champion. Until then, keep the cones at bay and light the lipos, do work drivers! |

A couple more pics from a winter series rnd six, where drivers had a hard time keeping rubber to rock, unless they were running Pit Bull Rock Beasts. |
