Default Axle tech

Was just wondering what would be the cause of rear wheels spinning off the ground but not when a load is applied. I have taken the axle apart but cant get the spur gear apart

Plenty of threads in here about this exact problem. Most likely the pin inside your spur assembly has broken. Try getting the spur apart...there are 4 screws on the spur assembly itself, and on each outdrive cup there is a long set screw. Remove all of that and it should pull apart.

Default rest of inside

Dont you want it somewhat like the old pin, putting a hardened one in just means u need change the rest of it, the pin is designed to break instead of the gears right?

that is exactly the idea of the pin, my opinion, if you breaking pins, then your binding to hard.
