| OZ RS10 beater.
Greetings. New to the whole crawler scene so here is my newb thread by a newb for newbs probably full of stupid questions etc. So its a bone stock RS10 (not the XT) The previous owner fitted the 390 sized XT motors and swapped the brick battery for a stick 6 cell 1700mah unit I've spent a bit of time reconfiguring things as i did not like the way the crawler drove. The raised ride height was causing all kinds of problems with the edge of the motor cans hanging up on the lower links, I have since filed down the offending links and edge of the motor cans. Top mounted battery coupled with mega ride height was making it rather prone to rollovers, this has been relocated to the front axle to aid with the lack of traction those shitty stock tyres provide. While we are on the topic of tyres the front foams have been removed and the small centre lugs shaved off as per rs10 thread on here. The Rx unit had an intermittent fault when i recieved the crawler, so a quick trip to ebay found me a new one of those, and that's where it all started. 15kg metal geared servos, 2 nimh batteries, b6 charger and a few other odds and ends These are all still on their way. Then i found Crawforfd engineerings site.... Metal gear sets, 8 tooth pinions, wing delete brackets and a larger battery tray. Before any of this stuff arrived i started researching lipo. Now i have a cutoff and some 2s lipos on their way too. Cooked my front servo so for now I've swapped them over front for rear, On the rear I removed the servo horn, unscrewed the steering link a few turns to lengthen it a couple of mm and attached it directly to the faulty servo shaft. Hey presto, instant locked out rear steer, totally reversible in a few seconds (after i replace the dead servo) Future mods will be : UBEC (will order that on monday) Rovers Bent bottom links Mini hd cam hilux body if i can find a cheap one Pics to come. Sounds like your well on your way: -) you can also just bend the stock links. I did and am very happy with the performance. Mobile Photobucket |

Greetings. Seems i forgot all about this thread. I have put the rockslide thru a pretty rigorous testing regime, which is a polite way to say i have beaten the shit out of it on a regular basis. It has so far withstood everything i have thrown at it, indluding a few trips to the beach complete with splashings of salt water and the occasional bulldog attack. (Handsome pete dissaproves of being chased around by it) The only casualties so far have been 1 stock servo and one cheapo ebay replacement. Current configuration : 2s 5000mah lipo w/ cheapo ebay cutoff Topcad C pattern front tyres (under $20 on ebay) Ebay 15kg servos (just destroyed one yesterday) Ebay Ubec Ebay servo horns (are you seeing a pattern emerging yet?) 4 link suspension mod XT lower chassis plate Nissan Navara D21 body in camel yellow I also have the following goodies waiting to fit : 8t pinions Metal gear sets Hardened drive pins Not going too fit these untill i break one of the standard items.... Or my banebots that i ordered this morning arrive.... Or i break something once my banebots arrive If anyone is wondering about the performance of those topcad tyres, they are a large improvement on the stock (or modified stock) rs10 tyres, but i feel they would perform better without the foams supplied. They are sticky but just a little stiff still. Also thinking about adding some lead shot to them for a bit of extra traction. I plan to move them to the rear after i order a pair of rovers. Still no photos as i am a lazy lazy man but i might get enthusiastic about it. Or i might not. |

So I'm sitting at work looking in the fishing section when I spy some lead ring weights for crab pots, turns out the inner diameter is exactly 2.2 inches.... i think ive solved my wheel weight dillema. Pics when i get home. I'll also upload some others at a decent size, i didn't notice untill i posted the last lot that they are all tiny. |

Wheel weights are cheap... ... but knuckle weights are better! (Here present on my LCC. Don't know if anyone makes them for the RS10.) |

So the weights turned out to be rather fruitless. Yes the traction increase was massive, but they were far too heavy, this was painfully obvious during the test runs. I like the idea of those knuckle weights but i dont believe they do them for the rs10. I will probably just go with my original plan to stick some lead shot in each tyre |

Lead shot is the easiest and reduces the rolling mass. I have seen where a guy took some aluminum scx 10 knuckles, made a mold in potting soil and poured melted lead around it. Worked pretty well and the scx 10 knuckles are a great upgrade. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Swapped the weights for some ball sinkers (what is it with me and the fishing gear?) With pretty decent results. I may still remove a few but i guess its trial and error till i find a nice balance between too heavy and too light, and by then my red dot rovers will be here anyway.... Also after seeing a few of you guys scale/ladder chassis setups ive decided to have a crack at one myself. Got some 2cm X 2cm (about 7/8th inch for you folk) aluminum square tubing which i will cut/bend/weld and then split down the middle as per one of you blokes thread i read a few days ago (thanks for the idea btw. This could all be quite some time in the making so dont hold your breath waiting. |

So I decided to shelve the scale chassis idea for now, because I hacked away at the stock chassis and I am so damn pleased with the outcome that I think I will leave it at that. Current specs : Stretched wheelbase over 1 inch longer Bent links Axle mounted shocks Removed about 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the chassis Hacked up the body and made a tray http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/203/op77.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/vi4f.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/sk8z.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/89/78ew.jpg/ It climbs wickedly now. My Banebots arrived today so I will tear down the axles and fit up the steel gears some time soon Last edited by Dungas; 01-07-2014 at 07:05 AM. |

Quick update : BaneBots fitted Rovers fitted Hi steer link mod 8t pinions fitted Steel gears fitted. New Ebay servo fitted, and burned out in 2 minutes... disgruntled email sent. So pleased with the performance now, the thing is unstoppable. Definatley more poke since fitting the BBs, slightly higher wheel speed and bucket loads more torque from the 8t pinions. As soon as the ladyboss returns and relieves me of dad duties I will go take it for a decent bash on the rocks down at the beach (at the end of my street) and get soe pretty pics. |

Wow, I can't believe they were so easily broken. I don't even have an RS10 yet but I already bought the steel gear sets and 8 tooth pinions so I'd have them but it sounds like they may not be worth using. After reading your report on the banebots I may pick up a couple of those also.

I haven't even bothered to check yet, but its probably just the pinion, given that when i turn the wheels by hand i can hear the gears turning over smoothly. Probably should have checked the mesh after a few test runs instead of hammering down beers and offering no mechanical sympathy. Kids, don't drink and drive. |

Turns out the grub screw had dropped out of the pinion so everything is fine..... Kinda... The pinion has crazy wear on it already so i will have to replace them asap. Steel gears look fine thankfully. Fyi chainlube is obviously not sufficient lubrication. |

Your truck is looking good. My chassis I made out of 1/4 inch stainless steel tubing. I made a skid plate out of 1/8" aluminum diamond plate. Each piece of tubing was about 15- 9/16" long. The skid plate is 3-1/4"x 4". I pop riveted the plate to the tubing starting everything from centerline. The skid plate I mounted above the tubing so it will slide on the rocks better than the aluminum. Then I bent the tubing by hand and by clamping to a table. I made it look like a standard chassis with about a 1-1/2" offset. Also sorry about your gears. Hope to get mine together soon

Shortened my wheelbase back to standard Battery mounted above the front axle on the chassis. lead shot removed as I have enough weight up front thanks to the battery relocation. will be locking out the rear steer too, going comp legal for a while as the (not so) local hobby store (which is a 45 mins by boat and a further hour and a bit by road) has a course and runs comps. also ordered a cheap 2.4 ghz system for comping.... and for the Hobbyking mission-D drift car I just purchased. Shit... its happening again |

when adding weight it is better to not add it to the wheels, this adds to the work the motor has to do this is why the knuckle weight have become so popular. anything that turns needs to be the lightest posible, gears, wheels, drive shafts, axles etc. i just changed out the plastic knuckles for some stock berg knuckles. same bearings, same spacing. those might give you more weight options. if nothing else less slop |

Good luck with the comps. I want to play around with mine a little more as well. The jeep body sits up to high on the chassis. Maybe modify the chassis. Hope to see some pics of your comp crawler. Also the drift cars seem like they would be fun.
