Portals are not really for road driven vehicles. Where you do see them is at offroad and rock crawling competitions. And they are a high dollar item, for full sized rigs, but for the $70 I spent for the pair was well worth it. I like the gearing and clearance I get with them.

Well, it looks like I broke a portal gear this weekend on mine. Sadly, it wasn't even bound up when it happened. I was driving through some fairly large rocks in a drainage ditch, but never got the tires bound up or did anything too aggressive.

I wonder if they've got any left or if I'll have to wait for the redesigned parts to ship.

Nope, they said they're out of extra gears now.

Yup, that's what Matt's response was. I guess I'll revert to the original axles for now. :(

Great timing. Looks like the portals stay in the truck.

Mine came in last night. I was a bit surprised to see axle shafts and new lockers. I thought the upper portal gear was the only real problem they were having with the current design.

What are the portal gears made from?

I haven't opened up the package to examine them closely yet. The original set was made from sintered metal, which I think was the main problem. Rather than make them from a better metal, it initially appeared that they decided to make them larger, but through the packaging last night, they looked more like a hardened steel with some sort of bronze-colored coating. If that's the case, they should be plenty strong, and the sintered lower gears will destroy themselves instead.

Got mine in & ran it for a little bit. I really like what this update has - new lockers, updated rear axle shafts, redesigned portal drive gears, and redesigned front portal case (to except the steel beefy gear!). I think these will survive my 2s abuse!
Time for my scx10 to step up the game!

What is the width on these axles? Anyone have a hex to hex measurement? I am thinking about a set for a SCX10 but do not want to go too much wider then the stock width.

I have my video posted that shows the updates on the production portals and how they compare to the beta version:

Has anybody addressed the lean that happens under throttle? I drove the truck for a couple hours today, and the left tire rubs the wheel well constantly because of the suspension lean under throttle.
