Default Allanon1965 tries out a Gen 8 Scout II--Now With Pics!

I just ordered this rig and it should be here in the next 4-5 days! I want to see how it does box stock and compare it to my scx10 II Scout. I will post up pics as soon as it is here!

I went and bought one at my LHS friday evening. I threw it under the bed cover of the truck and took my wife to dinner. By the time we got home and I unpacked it, the foams had frozen solid haha. I mean solid solid. Luckily I had a set of 4.75 MTRs sitting on beadlocks laying around so I threw them on and ran it. We had a very heavy and wet 4 inches of snow and its a plow with that big ass front end, but I can't really complain. After a few snow runs most of the outside stickers are pulling at the edges, but thats fine, I had planned to pull and wetsand the windows and what not. It seems like a decent truck. My body doesn't sit as firm as I'd seen some of the reviews and the ass end particularly likes to bounce around, but all in all I think it was a decent value. Looking forward to see what you do with yours. I got the blue FYI.

I have a blue one as well. I've been pushing it as far as I can out of the box stock. Amazing how good it is stock. Luckily, foams are ok in our current AZ temps right now. I'm very impressed with the Gen 8 so far. I keep saying this, but Axial & Vaterra have some catching up to do. Not a fan of Axial, but I love Ascenders. However, the Gen 8 is a better truck. Glad to see Redcat stepping up.

My buddy brought his Gen 8 over the other night now I'm impatiently waiting for one of my preferred shops to get an orange one in stock.

Ideally, I'll hold out until an ebay seller has them and a 15% off coupon pops up but that is a doubtful situation.

I tried the rc4wd MTRs on black beadlocks with rings in my thread. Ehh, didn't fit the old school theme I want. Swapped over to the polished motoworx with TSLs. Look is much better, performance I believe to be much better but by the time the swap happend snow has melted so I can't compare apples to apples

OK, My new Red cat Scout II arrived today and I noticed an issue as soon as I opened up the box, I am contacting Red cat about it today.

I threw a battery in it and ran it around the yard in the snow, it did very well, even with the foams being as hard as a brick in the cold! I mean literally solid!

I opened up the diffs and transfer case to see how well they were built and lubed. I was surprised a bit by the beefiness of the lockers and ring gears. Even the plastic gears in the transfer case were beefy. There was sufficient lube in the diffs as far as I was concerned. The transfer case had a light coating of grease, which is all I would do on plastic gears anyway.

The steering servo seems more that adequate and has the metal servo arm.

The pan hard bar doesn't hit on anything when fully compressed but the outer steering link ends slightly rub on the tires. The plastic link ends on the rig seem to be on the small/light duty side but time will tell. The shocks seem like they are capable for stock shocks, again time will tell...

I noticed an odd thing with the ESC...the tag states 7.2v nimh and 7.4v lipo, but the ESC label states 2s-3s and 5-9 cell... I ran on a 5200mah 3s lipo with no issues.

My velcro strips are junk also

odd about the decal, but now that you point it out, I can't say whether mine has them or not. I can't seem to find any straight down photos. I guess I wasn't concerned about it because I planned on stripping most if not all the decals anyhow at some point.

anxious to see what you come up with for it. Its a cool little platform. mgputer was kind enough to help me out with a few things. I'm going to clear the windows and do a few small tasteful mods. I still haven't decided if I'll keep this body or whether I'll hardbody it, time will tell.

I am super anxious to watch a few of you guys and what you can turn this into though.

I think I am going to try my upholstery stapler I use on ATV seats and hope the plastic doesn't crack.
