Default Gen 8 Chromoly steel axles and portal gears.

Got my new Axle set. Looks like it should work well and seems to be really nice quality.

I suspect they made the CVD ball smaller for these to be machinable. Can't you compare old and new shafts please?

Why only 2 holes for the pin? Why not 2 extra holes just in case? I've seen other rc vehicles that put 4 or 6 holes in stub axles. Example; Tekno TKR6853

If it were to wear the hole out at least you could use the extra holes to tighten it back up.

I've never seen extra holes. Honestly if it is hard enough the pin should wear before the gear.

I'm converting to brushless so we'll see how it goes.

Yes the ball is smaller. The shaft is different as well. It's slightly narrower. I'll post some pics soon

Pulling my brushless set up out. I just put it in broke both stock portal gears and split the rear axle case and the rear portal cover. I believe I'm done with the cat.
I can't run the cat like my axial rigs.
Tekno does it in their stub axles. I just thought it would save money in the long run.

Interested to see how those hardened gears work out.

Thanks

When I did the CAD model for machined input gears there was no way it would be strong enough with the stock CVD ball due to the ball being very deep into the gear. I abandoned the project. So they had to make it smaller for it to work. Hopefully they haven't just moved the weak spot from the gear to the CVD ball. I'm assuming the new material they are using will mitigate that.

Yes that is what they did but they used a smaller tube inside the ball so the material should be about the same thickness in the ball. I think part of the issue was the cvd cup hit the axle before the stearing got to the 47 degrees as they relieved the axle shaft slightly where the cup hit on the axle.

I took it out and tried them out powering out of binds etc and they seem durable so far. That's running a 550 21t on 3s.

this was my fear with this rig the cvs allways looked like a failure point the case spliting realy sucks also means these axles arent worth building the other side i had major issues with the ar60s too the housing would flex like mad i went through 3 housings and 2 gear sets chassing the problem before i upgraded to boom phaties and no more issues im still running the same gears and housings and its been almost 3 years now

i am seeing aluminum axle housings pop up treal is making some and of course redcat has there over priced axle housings personally im waiting for the pot metel axles but probably will just switching to ar44s or ar60s lol
im still gona load my rig down with as much aftermarket parts as i can aford in the hopes that there will be some pot metal axles someday

So far so good. Been running a hw foc Axe 2300kv on 3s. No breakage of any kind yet and I have not been holding back. Axles seem to do the trick.
