Shock Oil: Thinner? Less? None?
 

Anyone dumped or swapped the shock oil in a Gen8 to get the suspension to react more like a real truck - which, I get isn't necessarily better... just "realer"

I just saw a video posted in another thread - the guy ran the shocks (Traxxas Bronco) with no oil. The truck bounced and swayed like a real truck. Well, it looked more real to me.

I also prefer the seemingly more realistic dynamics of running trails without shock oil. It can make for very fast weight transfers when crawling, but I can't say it bothers me too much.

Some people go as far as removing the o-rings / seals to create very free suspension movement. That's a little bit to little damping for my liking, and I'd also worry about dirt building up inside the shock as well.

Looks pretty capable rkj and that looks like a pretty sweet place to run around, with varying surfaces and obstacles.

Thanks, the Ascender does well. Even without shock oil, the legendary torque twist does not bother me much.

I have an E10. I figured I would try a little something different, to me anyway. I removed the oil, left the outer springs on with the adjusters (aftermarket shocks), then I found some lighter springs that fit inside the shocks. That eliminated the oil but kept a lot of the dampening. soft shocks, no mess. seems to be working rather well.

I just swapped the oil to associated 30wt this past weekend, but it wasn't to make it bounce or look like a real truck. I had to do it because I had a couple shocks that seemed off and figured rebuilding them with green slime and new oil would help matters some.

Haven't touched my Gen 8 Axe unit yet. Rear Shocks out of the box were a bit off. One seems to have less oil Fronts seem to compress ok, smooth, but the pan hard bar and steering pan bar are both a mm or so too long. upon full compression, one side of the front, the shock compresses and doesn't move, but on the other side (passenger) the shock moves outward as it compresses because the pan hard/steering pan bars are a bit to long. I may look at making a small adjustment or a shorter ball end on the one side to shorten it up just a little bit.

Other than that. the shocks not been too bad. I got some oils here now, and was thinking of running 25 or 30 up front, and some 35 or 40 in the rear and see how it does.

They need some tweaking out of the box. mostly just full fills and some tweaks to the pan hard.

The only issue I have with running no shock oil is that there is no damping at all resulting in a lot of bouncing. To counter the bouncing I run 10wt oil which gives me realistic movement but still offers some damping. That said, I encourage people to try different things. What I like the next person may not so listen to the recommendations but try the different setups yourself to see what works for you and what does not.

It's funny... what I want to minimize in my 1/1 truck I want to replicate in my 1/10 truck. I'll try a little 10wt

I just filled mine with 35 weight losi oil. We will see how it works when I get some time to run it
