| Quick Gen7 Pro question regarding jumpy throttle control.
Father's Day is approaching and I was looking at buying an upgrade or two for my Dad's Gen7 Pro he got last month. So far his main complaint is that the throttle is really jumpy when trying to crawl at really low speeds. There seems to be a lot of dead-zone before the motor kicks in and then the motor jumps to life. I'm assuming this is because the stock ESC isn't very good and can't be calibrated. I'm really happy with the Hobbywing WP1080 ESC I put in my TRX-4, it has extremely good low speed control and the throttle is super smooth throughout the power curve, so I was thinking about getting him one. Am I correct in thinking this is an ESC issue and not a Radio/Receiver issue? Thanks! |

I would start with the esc and replace it with the HW1080 with all the settings you should be able to get more to his liking. The tx/rx that come with the Gen7 is like most tx/rx the came in the RTR kits is nothing to write home about, I think the ones Traxxas uses are much better. He he is still complaining about low end control I would then look at getting a better radio system.

If I'm correct, the Gen7 comes with a 17 turn motor, which IMHO, is too fast for slow crawling. Going to a 35t or 45t motor will help a lot for slow crawling. And these work really with the HW1080 ESC.

The ESC can make a big difference in low speed control. The Hobbywing 1080 is a big upgrade over the stock ESC in this regard and has multiple programable features that affect this and other parameters. That would be my first recommendation to improve low speed control. If he wants more control than this offers I'd recommend a Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster motor. With these two upgrades the low speed control is amazing. Although you can improve low speed control somewhat through a transmitter upgrade it will have less of an effect than these upgrades.
