Default 540's done!!

27 turn Axial 540 motors w/ 12t pinions
stock links and shocks
8.4v 3000 mah pack
stock ESC and receiver

Short video (self shot and shaky)

http://s1212.photobucket.com/user/EL...54865.mp4.html

All the torque you could ask for, more than enough wheel speed!

As you can see and hear I need to do something about the shocks. The body rubs under throttle and drag brake bad.

Any recomendations on what I could do to the stock shocks other than put oil back in them? All I have is 25wt and I think it would just leak out again

We are going to put it though its paces this evening and I will try to get more pics and vids.

I will post the complete process when I get all the pics together.

Let me know what you think

OK Here you go:

Step 1. Cut the case. I used a carbide cutter on a dremel. I am using 12 tooth pinions so I didn't have to cut much.

Step 2. Fit motor, so pinion meshes properly. Go slowly, it is much easier to cut more than fill back. The Less you cut the more strength you retain.

Step 3. Notch pin so it can bottom out in hole.

Step 4. Rough up area around cut out spots, clean with alcohol, and apply JB weld or epoxy of choice.

Step 5. Put a dab of silicone in pin hole.

Step 6. Assemble gear case and put back on rs10.

Repeat steps 1 through 6 on other axle.

The motors just barely touch the shock mount on the lower link, not enough to worry with.

It still has all the flex it had before

Last evening we went out and he got a little over a half hour of good strong drive time out of a 7cell 3000mah pack. It made my 2.2 scx10 look bad more than once. Motors never even got warm. I really like how it works and my son loves it.

Thanks guys, sorry you cant see the video.

I have some more vids I might load to youtube and try to embed them in the post. You really need to see this thing in action. Torque a plenty, and enough wheel speed to get some good air!

I would recomend this mod to anyone, cheap and easy...just like I like them! Wait that means I like my mods like I like my women!

I would be just a little worried about the gear box snapping on the cut out without the motor plate. Jb weld does work well tho so maybe its ok. Plus a new housing is cheap anyway i guess lol. Nice work by the way how is it with 27t motors and 12 tooth pinion? Sounds like it must be fast. Mines fast with 35t and 10 tooth. Is it still smooth at slow speeds?

Yes it is very fast, but still has all the low speed torque you would ever need. My boy wants to turn it into a tuber. So it looks like we will have plenty of work to do after Christmas, if he acts right.

Going to get some vids rounded up and posted to youtube. You have to see this thing in action, it will make a fine rock bouncer. I told him he should name it wraith killer, with four wheel steering and the 540's it is flat out wicked! I have a hard time keeping up with my 2.2 scx10.

I have been keeping a close eye on pinion mesh and the cases for cracking. So far I am glad to report everything is holding up great and he drives it like he stole it.

The only con is reduced run time, but it still runs about 45 mins on a 8.4v 3300mah battery pack.

Lots of guys have cut their cases just like this and never had a problem that I've heard. I've been watching closely since I'm DRASTICALLY cutting some cases, to the point there may not be much holding on to the second gear's pin. I don't think this part of the case sees a lot of 'sideload' that would cause things to break that way. but Torture test's will show.

I made my own motor plate and instead of shortening the gear pin i made a hole in the plate for it so theres no worry of it giving way. I just cut more out of the case to run a 9 tooth pinion in the rear. I have a 15 tooth in the front. 35t novak terra claws. I just put in a dig switch and the tires didnt lock up as well as i had hoped with the 15 tooth pinion. Now with the 9 tooth it locks up a little to good lol. I was testing it in my living room on carpet and the front drive pin broke from trying to drag the rear end

Haha yeah its all i had for that pitch. Before i snapped the pin there wasnt much change in speed but clod stall was non existent. Im not sure if there will be any downsides or load issues on the motor or esc until i can run a few packs thru on the rocks and see what happens i guess

Default 540's done!!

Check out parts for the redcat volcano epx. Thr spur on that is the same pitch as the rs10. It will be a 1/8 hole for a 540 motor tho. If you are running stock 390 cans you will need to figure out some kind of adaptor. If they dont make one let me know. I could make one up for ya!
