I'm in the process of building a trailer myself. Heres what I'll be using.

I already made the receiver to hold a bike rack I made. Its 1/4 brass square stock. It's strong enough for what I'm doing, but I'd recommend steel or aluminum for heavier trailers.

For the trailer I'm going to use an m3 rod end. There are a few different types. Those will plug into the tamiya m3 ball end on the hitch. Just like a real trailer.

Just thought I would throw mine in here. Been working on building a trailer for my boat but the same concept could be used for other trailers. So far I'm at about $32 in materials and only about 4 hours of build time. It's coming along nicely so far.
