Recovery Straps

Made up some recovery straps the other night. They scale out to a 4" strap @ 20'. I found some 3/8" bra strap online for cheap and figured hey if it can hold up my wife's sweatermeat it can handle abuse. Used 3/16 heat shrink for the protective cover on the loop.

I sewed the loop together with heavy duty thread along with a rubber cord from a disassembled bungee cord as the recovery strap leash. If you take apart those small 4inch bungee cords they have a bunch of smaller rubber cords inside, they worked perfect for this.

Wrapped everything tight with heavy duty thread with super glue over it to keep the wraps tight and stuck together. I should have used a more complimentary color for the thread but it was all I had at the time. I will probably dye the straps yellow anyways which should better match the black. Next set with be orange and grey like the ARB ones. http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/a...er/strap02.jpg

These are recovery straps, they stretch and build kinetic energy to pull you out something you don't want to be in. Tow straps are the things you buy at Academy or Walmart and don't stretch, they break and attempt to kill you with the backlash/shrapnel from those stupid sewn on hooks that comes back towards you. 8) Knowing the difference in 1:1 might save a trip to the hospital. Not trying to preach, just that I have seen bad accidents because of improper recovery efforts, the kind that starts with the setting down of a beer followed by "hey watch this".

Got into a debate with my dad about tow straps vs recovery straps. A while back I told him I bought some recovery straps. He said "sh!t those don't work, I have broke every one I bought"(he bought tow straps to use for recovery). Then he saw me use my strap pull out a Ridgeline with a 5kLB POS Christ Craft on the trailer stuck in the mud....He had me order a strap the next day. Love proving him wrong.

Granted, these in no way build energy like the real thing, but they do stretch.

Yes I agree in the 1:1 world when a recovery goes bad it can go really bad.. Watched an accident where they connected 2 tow straps together with metal ...Tow strap ending up breaking..n the metal flew back smashed the back window n hitting driver in back of head....
N u know in 1:1 world you not close to hospital
Guy was very lucky to survive that!

You can get a hell of a welp for a few seconds. Gotta be safe.

I can relate to the whole tow strap vs. recovery strap ordeal.
Yes it is silly to make a fuss about it in the RC world, but my other rc buddy and I have had numerous debates because I refuse to put metal hooks on the scale two straps I made for my rig. His arguement is that it is to difficult to hook up quickly without the hooks, mine is a real 1:1 would never have metal involved in the tow strapping process.

Pics didn't load up for me but I'm sure they look good from all the comments!

Soon as the temps get tolerable in my garage I am gonna build some. I have about 3ft of strap that is near scale for limiting straps, came off a set of binoculars. I have seen them made from shoe laces, but they were about 1/2" wide. Too big for scale.
