mon-g's trailer build

I thought I should start my own thread instead of jacking someone else's.

So it started with this, pretty normal:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0525.jpg

Here's the starting material, 1/2" x 1/16" box tubing:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0524.jpg

This is where I ended yesterday:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0526.jpg

Not too much work done today.

Got a start on the ramps

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0537.jpg

When I started this project i researched for other builder's axles for ideas. the only one I could find involved machining, and I don't have access to a lathe. So after about an hour thinking about it I came up with this. Rear hub carriers, spindles and bearings from an RC18T. 1/2" round tubing fits perfectly into the carrier. I know, I gotta get bigger tires....:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0535.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0534.jpg

That's it for today. More to come.

mongoose 02-03-2011 08:33 PM

Work is still slow so got more done on the trailer.

Finished the ramps:

These are the pieces for the side rails:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0553.jpg

Here are the side rails all done:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0554.jpg

That's all for today. Supposed to have work tomorrow so hopefully won't do anything else for a little while. I'm waiting for some part anyway. (like bigger wheels and tires.......)

Kentuckcrawlers 02-03-2011 09:57 PM

how much would you charge to build me a trailer..lol...

dont slow down 02-04-2011 01:21 PM

Nice man, what are your dimensions?

mongoose 02-04-2011 08:00 PM

The carrier portion is 19" x 12". A buddy of mine who builds racecar trailers help me the plan.

Any chance of showing how it went together right up to the point to where you bolt the tire on?

mongoose 02-05-2011 04:01 PM

The axles aren't welded on yet. I'll take them apart and photo what I can and post later today.

kuatto 02-05-2011 07:51 PM

Appreciate it...."thumbsup"

mongoose 02-05-2011 09:46 PM

So I took some extra RC18T parts I had: the spindles from some CVD's the stock rear carriers, the bearings for the carriers and the rive pins. I lucked out to find that the carriers fit right on to 1/2"o.d. round tubing.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0563.jpg

Next I cut off the mounting ears from the carriers.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0565.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0566.jpg

Then drill 1/8" holes where the mounting ears were.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0567.jpg

Then corresponding holes in the round tubing, and tap to 3mm.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0568.jpg

And assemble the hub assembly to the tubing.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0569.jpg

Now I was going to use RC18T wheels, but it was suggested to me to go bigger on the tires. Luckily there are adapters that will mount 1/10th wheels onto the 1/18th.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0570.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0571.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0572.jpg

And that's it. Hope that helps. It's about all I could think of without doing any machining.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0593.jpg

And a shot with the intended cargo:

Mock up of the fenders:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0596.jpg

Mmmmmmm.....bacon:

Welded up the fender brackets, light brackets and reinforcements for the grating:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0599.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0600.jpg

That's it for now, more tomorrow.

kuatto 02-10-2011 08:02 AM

I really wish I had the equipment to do welding and brazing,it turned out great and thank you very much for the detailed pics of how the wheels were attached,it helped seeing the actual breakdown "thumbsup"

Got the grating on:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/100_0606.jpg

Now I'm waiting for more expanded metal for the ramps. I have to say that when I first looked the Whitebone trailers I knew I could not afford one, but after taking on this project, I really can appreciate Rocky's work.

mongoose 02-12-2011 04:20 PM

I got the tongue welded today. The rod end is from a Jato:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0608.jpg

Here is the hook up:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0609.jpg

Now for some of that checker plate:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0610.jpg

Last thing I did today was the fenders - also checker plate:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0611.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0612.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/100_0613.jpg

Now I just have to get more expanded metal to finish up the ramps then I can paint it.

caymin last 02-13-2011 09:39 AM

You did a fine job on that trailer, looks amazing with the expanded metal and mudguards installed.
It may be a little rough without any suspension though, even the smallest bumbs will be amplified by the solid axles with no damping or springs, just a thought.

dont slow down 02-13-2011 11:28 AM

Question: Why did you mount the axles so far forward? Is it to keep the tongue weight down or did you like the look? Just my opinion but it would look much better and more scale if the axles were a bit farther back.

Great job though, the expanded metal looks perfect!

mongoose 02-13-2011 03:49 PM

Yeah, I wanted the trailer to be as balanced as possible with the crawler loaded on. Thanks for the comments!
