Default Winch Torque... Is this too much?

I have been wanting to add a winch to my scaler for a while, but I wanted to have one that had enough torque to tackle any pull I wanted put it up against. I had thought of making one out of a servo, but I saw several of those fail at the last G6 I went to.

The one requirement I had for this winch was to be able to lift my scaler vertically... All 8 pounds of it;

I started with a MRC tranny and made a winch spool out of a HR gear set:

I made a bracket to mount it into my rig:

To power it I wanted to use a stock MRC ESC, but the one I bought didn't work, so I went with something just a little more beefy, an Axial AE-2:

The ESCs are wired in parallel off of the main battery. The main thing that I don't like about this set up so far is that the wiring is an awful mess.

But, with the lid on, everything works great. The controls for the 3rd channel of my DX3R are perfect for this:
B- 3 Position: Full in/stop/full out
C- Linear: Adjustable speed in and out
F- 2 Position: Full out or Stop.
I have the trim for the AE-2 set a about 45% in both directions, anything higher and it is just too fast to control.

I'm not sure how much cable I should have. The line I am running is fairly thick, but it only allows me to have about 4' on the spool. I have some 30lb fishing line, which will work, and allows me to have about 30' on the spool, but it is very thin. What else can I use that will give me a little more reach?

Thanks for looking!

Looks like it should be able to pull you out....... Nice work and the spool looks wide enough around that the thin braided cable from home depot or lowes should wrap neatly without trying to bind up like it does on the smaller bulldog or 3racing winches...

Nice way to think outside the box
If someone else has done this before, I sure haven't seen it.
LOTS of possibilities from your idea! I for see many variations of
Your idea to spread like wildfire.... Shoulda patented it...LOL

I was thinking about doing this with a micro setup... I used to run my lights from a Losi micro esc/rx and a little 2s lipo

Thanks for the comments guys!

About how much cable do most guys run on their winches?

You can get some descent 50lb leader line at wal mart. You probably want 10' or so on there.

Great idea, Btw.

I run 6ft. of plastic coated 29 braided strand line. It is called Beadalon you can get it at most craft stores in the jewerly making section. It is for making necklaces. tough stuff.

Need to look into this. Thinking about remaking my class 3. I might see if I can make this into the design.

I'm in the middle of a 6x6 build that I want to turn into a recovery vehicle with a boom winch... so I am really interested in your tranny winch that you've built here. Hell I might even build one with an axial tranny and make it unstoppable. Just need to figure out a spool to attach to the tranny. Did you turn down the HR gear set to make your spool? And does the AE2 speed control drag brake create enough stoppage to keep your rig hanging in place?

My 645 servo winch has been around for a looong time and never failed me and will dead lift my 8lb rig 6' hangin in the air just swinging, yours looks like it will get the job done with no problems I did get a quicksand though just for shits and giggles

I am wandering if a micro transmission could be used. I have no experience with them though. In theory it should do the same thing. I am just not sure if it would be any better than the stock winch gearboxes. Maybe I will find me one of these and give it a try.
