How to turn down stock tlt shocks.

I am working on a scale tlt build and was wanting to run the turned down tlt shocks but I wanted to do it myself and save cash for other things so here is what I did to turn them down.

First thing you need is a drill press a file and the tlt shocks

The second thing you need to do is chuck the small end into the drill press like this.

The next thing is to turn the drill press on and use the file to remove the aluminum from the shock body.

What I did was watch the shock body and keep removing material till the main body was level with the small end then when it was I removed the shock and chucked it back into the press so that I could turn down the small end just enough to remove the gold.

Here is a stock shock VS the turned down shock.I will use sand paper to do a smooth finish on them later on.

Here all all 4 shocks done and ready to be installed.

Nice job JB. I think thats how I'll do mine. How long did it take to do each one?

After I did the first one and figured out how much pressure they could take about 5 minutes a pop.Its super easy to do and looks O so good."thumbsup" One thing I do have to do is use some oven cleaner or something to remove the gold on the shock tops or I will polish them from top to bottom.

I'm going to do that with the ones I got just for the hell of it. Looks really nice just for a file. Good thinkin'.

Nice job! I did pretty much the same thing, but mounted a file in the clamp on my mill.:) A wire wheel does a nice job getting the rest of the gold off and gives a cool brushed finish.

Did you have trouble with the file clogging?

syco133 10-25-2006 09:12 PM

I just tapped it every 30 seconds or so to get all the crap off it and it never clogged.

thats a good cheap trick, i might do that, or do it to my friends :D i like how they look turned down

Neato.

I would just leave the cap gold- kinda breaks things up a bit.

FrankyRizzo 10-25-2006 09:43 PM

Those look really good. I have a couple of sets I might need to do.

ColquittCustom405 10-25-2006 09:43 PM

That is what I was gonna say.
If you have some spares you can cut them down and produce a "reservoir" type shock.
