Smile Prime's Scale Garage

I have been saying for a while now that I need a scale garage to use as a photo booth. Finally I have pulled the trigger and started my build. I have been posting my progress on my Instagram (Prime_RC_TV) but decided to share them here as well.

The hope is that once finished this will look like one half of a bigger garage.

I started by laying out a wood base for the floor to set my foot print and started putting up the foam core walls. Going with foam core to keep the weight down.

Next up finished raising the walls.

Got the access door and windows framed in. Also got the rafters raised.

Garage door built and installed. Is a matching one on the outside of the garage since that side will be detailed as well because where this will set that side will be visible.

Covered the floor with some poster board and a coating of a mixture of white glue and sand to give the floor a texture reminiscent of concrete once painted. (The gray color is where a bit of gray paint was added to the glue so I could easily see where the mixture had been applied.)

The walls with a base coat of color on them.

Floor painted and the walls finished up. Went with a blue and gold for the lower wall to give it some pop and personality. Also painted the door, added a door knob and a breaker box to the rear wall.

Well that's it for now but much more to come so please stay tuned.

I will get you a pic of the rafters, they are nothing fancy but I think they are quite passable.

Thanks. And here is an update.

Since this end will be visible from where the garage will sit on the shelf I decided to do it up as well. To make it look like it might fit in a residential area went with some wood siding painted blue with yellow trim. The colors a bit darker in person as well.

Also made a sign to go above the door. Made it in the classic "Hot Rod Shop" style.

That's it for now, more to come soon. I hope the photos work, I just switched hosts. If there is a problem with them I would appreciate it if some one would let me know.

Made a workbench for the garage. It is made out of foam core and the legs are dowel rods. The stool is from a bottle cap and is meant to look like the vinyl ones you get in part stores and service centers that have all the logos on them. Also added a small hobby drill press, made some paint cans, a small tool box and added some beer cans and tools to the top.

It makes a nice little workstation for wrenching on RC cars. ;)

The work area with a pit mat.

In the shop

I need to add some lights soon though, getting dark in here.

20170212_221317

Also as promised here are the rafter pictures. They are nothing fancy but are quite serviceable I think. Plus once roof is fixed into place they will not be that visible. These are also made from foam core, though there is a small dowel rod running across the garage in the front and middle stringer for added strength.

20170215_162623

20170215_162209

Keep in mind that in this pic the roof is not painted or finished yet and is just sitting in place. Not going to fix it into place until after I get the lighting finished up.

That's it for now, next up? Maybe I'll make a toolbox.
Thanks for looking, please stay tuned for more to come.

Wow! That's an awesome looking garage. Now that you installed rafters you might want to put scale lights up there. It will look awesome and it will help when taking photos. Nice work!

Thank you! And there are plans for some lights. I have 12 of these LED strips. Plan to make housings for them that mimic overhead fluorescents, just not sure how many I will use yet. Waiting on an AC to 12V converter to arrive before I decide, though I might start on the housings in the mean time.

For a little garage decoration I decided to add an engine in the corner. I have had this Parma Hemi for quite sometime now and finally found a use for it.

First I made a pallet for it to sit upon.

A little test fitting...

And now it is ready to sit in the corner and await the day it gets installed in a future project.

Next up? I think I need a tool box, so the plan is to make one. Stay tuned for more.

Every garage needs a toolbox so I am setting about making one.
Here is where I am right now. The bottom box is made from a cardboard box, the top box is made from a foam core base. Both have cardboard and plasticard details.

Here it is in primer.

Next up is to add some paint to the box.

I know right?! Wish I had a blown Hemi in the corner for my Plymouth, guess the 440 will have to do.

On an update to the garage, I got the toolbox painted up. Pretty happy with the outcome. Added some decals to it, figured since my real tool box got them why not my scale one as well.

And sitting in the garage. I don't remember where exactly the cones came from, I think they came in a "kids meal" toy my daughter had once picked up, but they seem to fit in very well here.

LMAO @ Root Breaker!! Funny thing is that I have always wanted to build a big fancy doll house, maybe I should build one for my daughter. We can put it next to the garage to complete the look. lol

I have not really had much spare time lately but I did find enough to get a little more work finished up. I made a small homemade tire rack for the corner. I have one very similar to this one in the corner of my 1:1 garage that I use to hold extra tires and wheels. You can't really tell in the pictures but I did weather it slightly with a slight black wash.

I have started on my lights.

I made one to use as a test piece. Made a housing from styrene.

20170221_195748 by Prime RC, on Flickr

Taped in a light to test it out.

20170221_195743 by Prime RC, on Flickr

Taped it to the rafter and tested it out on a 3S lipo. Over all I think it looks good. I think once I add the others it will be quite bright.

20170221_195542 by Prime RC, on Flickr

Now to just make 7 more of these and get them painted and wired up. I am going to be running these off of a 12v converter.

Thanks for looking. Please stay tuned, more to come.

Each pair will have a separate switch if all goes to plan

I now have all the lights made, mounted, and wired up.

Here are the fixtures completed.

2017-03-24_09-34-13 by Prime RC, on Flickr

I painted them nickel on the inside, white on the outside.

2017-03-24_09-33-42 by Prime RC, on Flickr

To power and control them I got a 12 volt converter off of eBay and this distribution block from Wal-Mart. Each pair of lights are on their own switch and this leaves two extra switches to use if I decide to add accent lights later.

2017-03-24_09-36-44 by Prime RC, on Flickr

A couple of quick pics with the lights on. I think it gives a nice "florescent light" look.

Though other projects have come up, I am still working on this as time allows.
