Default Trailer build.

This is my first attempt at building a trailer. I’m building it mostly out of brass. Not having a lot in stock at the local hobby shop or hobby lobby I had to do some extra building. Mostly having to make my own channels and angle for the bed sides.

Here is one finished side and the parts I used. Each side of the deck is 24” long. Which with the axial scx-10 is that is a scale 16.5 ‘ trailer.

Almost Finished deck.

An idea of the size and stance of it.

Still need to build the tow bar with and a main frame. I have some ideas on how I want to build the suspension. A little ambitious. Since I didn’t want to tackle a dovetail and looking at actual trailer designs I ran across the air bag trailers. Flat decks the will drop to the ground for race cars. I think it would be possible to simulate the air bags with some servos moving the suspension mount. Time will tell I guess....

Here is what I came up with on the axles.

They will use Traxxas 2wd front axles and bearings and either some touring car shocks or some 1/16 Traxxas shocks. I have exactly 4:1 ratio between the swing arms and the shock mount. Which the shocks will be mounted horizontal. I might have to narrow on axle in order to keep the tires somewhat close. The swing arms are 65mm hole to hole. I don’t have a printer yet so I going to send the designs to Shapeways.

Tell me what you think. Will it work?

Actually I think I’m fine with the size. I have some 1/14 scale semi tires. Running the number on them they would be about the same size as a real 225/75/15 trailer tire. I am sure I can get them to fit on a 1.9 wheel. Here is how they digitally fit.

1/14 semi truck tyres, 1.7, fit Tamiya 1.9 wheels easily. I had them on my trailer for a while, no need to glue them, they fit tight!

Nice 3D modeling work. ACE Hardware carries K&S brass supplies if you have one local to you. My LHS stopped carrying the brass when ACE picked it up a while ago.
