Neil's Scale Garage #2

After the sad demise of my first scale garage i've finally got round to starting Mark 2. The first one was built onto our old dining room table and as such took up a lot of room in the corner of my garage. So, after it went off to the tip, i set about thinking of how i could improve it, and hopefully this will be the last one i do.

First thing was to make it wall mounted so i could use the space underneath. It's also a bit wider, not quite so deep, and it will have 2 sides rather than 1.

I started by primering the door a few weeks ago in the hope that it would get me motivated to start the rest. And it did.

Here's the door.

Left hand side will include the door, and a roller shutter (work in progress).

The back will have 3 windows.

The base getting primered. You can see here the framework mounted to the wall.

And lastly for now, the beginnging of the roller shutter.

I know it's not a great start, but i'm hoping that starting a build thread will keep me interested in making small amounts of progress... We shall see...

I then broke out the roller, and finished the sides, and painted the floor with some left over garage floor paint i had.

And some more left overs. Sort of a creamy off white. It'll do nicely.

I had a small disaster with the roller shutter door. The corrugated styrene was really flimsy, so i bonded it to a piece of 3mm styrene sheet, and went to bed. When i went in to the garage the following morning, it was like a pringle!!!

So, it had to be scrapped. Then, i decided to make my own. I found an old header board from work made from 4mm foamex. So, i chopped it to the right size and then used the back end of my tweezers to score lines into it. A bit of a laborious task, but quite happy with the results.

Pleased with the results so far.

Next job was to finish the roller shutter edges, top box and pull chain.

I finally finished the painting and have started adding some little details. I decided to put some brickwork in to break up the blank looking wall. I still need to add the skirting boards and finish up the roller shutter, then i can screw/glue the sides to the base. So, here's where i'm at now:

https://i.imgur.com/fv3ZbvV.jpg

Here's the view through one of the windows:

https://i.imgur.com/rrxM7Wb.jpg

I'm not sure what to do with the window frames yet. The glass (lexan) will be painted matt clear to prevent viewing through it. Thoughts on the frames? Should i leave them, paint them or stain them?

More coming soon... Thanks for looking.

Love the JK Hard body, but have you shorten the rear suspension links? Or still in stock length 313mm?

It's been a while since i updated this thread, because my laptop packed up before Christmas, and trying to add photos using my phone was too laborious. But anyway, all is good now.

So, I thought i'd just share a few up to date photos of how the garage looks now.

Here's the pics.

While waiting for a few parts for a TF2 build i'm about to start for the G6 event, I've been working a little in the workshop. I made a new bench, some shelving, and also finally added some scale banners and details.

Re: Neil's Scale Garage #2

I've been busy working on a few other projects and have not added much to the scale garage.

I made a quick chassis stand to the TF2 build i'm working on.

https://i.imgur.com/rDUunDp.jpg

I ordered some styrene sheet from an online model supplier and whilst browsing their site, found these lovely scale bricks. I've no intention of building anything with them, so just knocked up a quick pallet and added some piano wire.

https://i.imgur.com/yP43QXw.jpg

And lastly for now, a little crate to house some spare gears I have knocking around.

More coming when I can think of something else to make.

Re: Neil's Scale Garage #2

I thought it was about time I added a little update here. I've just started (this evening) to make some storage cupboards for the empty corner of my garage. Now, I'm no carpenter, but I don't think they've turned out too bad. They're not quite finished yet, but you get the idea I hope.

And here's just a few photos from around the garage in it's current state. Once I've finished the D90, and TF2 Hilux I'm part way through I'll then turn my attention to adding more details to it.

Did this yellow Jeep come to fruition? It looks awesome as it sits!

My mind combined yellow and Jeep as I was typing and it came out Jellow before I corrected it. Funny name for a yellow Jeep. :lmao:

Unfortunately I lost interest in the yellow Jeep and sold it on. I bought a TF2 instead

Re: Neil's Scale Garage #2

I've not done a great deal on my scale workshop recently, but since finishing my flatbed TF2 I've had a little time to do a few updates.
The roller shutter end of the workshop I'm quite happy with. It looks good in photos and there's enough room for 2 trucks to happily sit it there.
Here's my TF2 and my Dad's D90 being built.

I wanted to do a little work with the opposite end of the workshop, as it was a little bit bare. So, I finished off the storage cupboards, and added some scale banners to the wall.

I wasn't too happy with the look of natural wood, so out came the paint. Much happier with it now. Also added a little sink unit.

And lastly, I won an RC4WD banner at the UK Recon G6. I've got no where to really put it, but it fits a treat on the front of the scale workshop and acts great as a dust shield.

Now that is a shop!
Thanks for sharing the process.
Gives me ideas, that can be a good thing or bad..
Are you using balsa wood for the cabinets and such?
Thanks

Yep, for the most part i'm using balsa. It's easy to cut (even with a hobby knife), and it glues nicely. I do have a lot of off cuts of very thin pine, which i have used in the past, but balsa usually wins.

Good luck doing your garage, and post up some pics when you're done "thumbsup"

I love every little detail. I have a similar larger garage, but don't have the extras that make it more realistic
