Hey thanks,

While the plaster is drying I will stick in some pics of some motor work.
Motorman1600 has figured out how to wind up some nice motors using the Reedy Mini-Mod 17t and 19t. After a couple weeks of very frustrating tedious work I managed to complete some motors. Even with Motormans1600 help and he already figured out how to do it.

Strip the old wire off and replaced the comm with a slightly larger one with more beef in the comm tabs.

I have wound motors before just holding them in my hand and the wire spool between the knees. I now see this is quite difficult so a arm winder was needed. I built this one out of 1/10 pan car axle parts and milled the arm clamp.

Much better

I have been running the Holmes mini motor and like it. I think his motor is close to perfect. My goal is to at least match or gain some wheel speed. Motorman1600 tested a lot of winds and 35t fits the need.
Here are some side by side shots. The Reedy has a shorter stack and a bigger diameter compared to the Holmes.

I used a 50cc syringe to suck epoxy deep into the winds and remove air. This is supposed to make them run cooler and keep the wire in place.

Motorman1600 has set up some base line RPM's at the wheel with different motors. I found my tach and was able to test, I did get 50-60 more RPM at the wheel compared to the Holmes mini.
The balance of the arm is better due to the exact pattern wind on each pole. It is much quieter running in the rig.

I really like the epoxy trick with the syringe. I don't think those wires are coming off. Nice work there Mike.

Thanks,

Back to the mold, after letting it dry for a couple days I heated it up to about 115 deg. and sealed it with West System epoxy. It really soaks it up when it's warm.

Getting excited.... soon as it's dry I get to lay it up.

Laid it up today 3 layers of 3k weave and some tow.. The tow is to reinforce the A pillar. This is exciting for me, hopefully pulling out a usable part.

Well I got lucky, using vise grips and a pry bar I got it out of the mold. Now I can make another if needed.

I am sanding all the epoxy off with 40 grit right down to the cloth before cutting it out. This gets rid of all the mold imperfections and will make it resist scratching from rocks while crawling. It will polish out quite nice.

All trimmed out it weighs 1.1 oz. I think I could of used 2 more layers of carbon.

I made 1 more using 6 layers of 3k cloth, much better. I have no worries about how it will hold up now. Weight is only 1.8 oz.

The mold broke on this one:-(

Got the transmission finished, here is a pic of the slight mod to the top gear to make the dual pad slipper from the mini-t fit. You need to move the slipper closer to the tranny and line it up with the pinion. The spacer that comes with the kit is a perfect gauge for how far to continue the flat spots on the shaft. I highly recommend the dual pad slipper. It works good and moves the spur out for better pinion fit, especially when using motors with shorter shafts.
