Default 53guy - Project Blitzkrieg

I've always thought the rigs in Crawl Magazine to be really just works of art on wheels and have wanted to duplicate the Blitzkrieg build for some time. So here it goes.

The list:

Front XR-10 Knuckles/shafts/C-hubs
Front Side Jones gearbox
Castle Mamba Max Pro
Castle 3800KV 4 Pole
3s Max Amps packs
Vanquish wheels
53guy built tube work
bunches of styrene
Other cool stuff

BTW, stock shafts look pretty miserable next to Maxx shafts.

From what I understand, the 1:1 has yet to be finished. It has gone through a few different hoods and I'm not sure what the latest hood is, but yes, that one is clear lexan.

It's the brainchild of Chris_The_Battery_Man, but basically it is an XR-10 gearbox with the output shaft flipped, the case drilled and a cover plate made for the bottom. I have a bearing retaining sleeve that I have made as well as I am using a titanium shaft with drilled outputs for T-maxx shafts and cross pins. Following the same route that Chris_The_Battery_Man has taken, I intend on using the plastic case until the idea is finalized, the fit and location are perfect and I'm convinced 100% that it'll work with 3800KV on 3s.....after that, I will replace the plastic housing with an aluminum one and possibly hardened gears depending on how much of a beating the stock gears can take.

Took a break from the body and cage today and made some progress on the transmission and frame rails.

I've had a few questions asked about the transmission so I'll just show you real quick how it is modified from a standard XR10 gearbox.

First thing and main thing is the output shaft. It normally goes into the housing and seats in the back cover while the long side sticks out the side the motor is on. Flop the shaft around and there are a few things you need to do. First off is to make a snap ring grove to hold the gear in place. It's not absolutely necessary depending on which side of the locating pin you put the gear, but for me, I needed a bit of extra length so I could drill for my cross pins, so that forced me to put the gear more towards the center of the shaft.

Next think I did was drill the hole in the case cover for the output shaft to come out of. It's a 5mm shaft, so a hair bigger than 5mm would be recommended. I put the bearing in, punched the hole with a small drill bit and worked the hole larger with a dremel, working around the race of the bearing. Not as accurate as you could get, but it's just a hole. I also wanted to keep the bearing seated in the case cover so I took a spacer from a T-maxx gear box and shaved it to fit. It's kinda hard to see in the pictures, but it's there, kinda like a C shape. I chamfered the bearing side so it holds the cage of the bearing and allows the inner ring to spin freely. I held it in place with a dab of CA glue....shouldn't have an issue with it.

After that, it's just putting the gearbox together.

All the parts

Motor plate bearings (flanged ones)

Output shaft and gear in...boom. I chose a 49mm Titanium shaft because I was concerned about the cross pin holes weakening the shaft pretty bad...we'll see how it holds up. I have a spare just in case.

12t idler gear/shaft in, spur gear in

I hate these little locating cross pins...they fall out all the time, so I hold them in place with CA glue.

The reduction gear is on and grease everything up...solid

Put the bearings on the shafts, drop the center case on, put the rear cover on and install the 10mm bolt and one 18mm bolt. Bolt up the pinion inspection cover with the other two 18mm bolts and bam, you're done....sorta.

I chose T-maxx outputs for this guy because I think the axial ones are weak sauce, but that's just me. You could just as easily do flats for outputs if you wanted, but I like the cross pins better. I had a local marina machine shop drill me some holes (I think the guy had a crooked eye or something because the holes don't line up, but oh well, it was free) in the titanium shaft and whammy, we're done.

Don't forget the pinion. I'm not putting it in yet because I want to keep the gearbox free of dirt and crap until I finish the build. Also, be sure to locktite everything as you install it all.

Hahaha, thanks man, it's coming slowly but surely. I think I could have done it with a transfer case, but you thinking of the XR10 gearbox sure freed up a ton of room up front where the AX10 case would have gone.

Spent a ton of time today working on the bumper and finally got it close enough to how the Blitzkrieg Jeep's looks to be happy. I'm not using the winch that completely replicates the 1:1, but I think it turned out just as well. Next up is to cut the grille around the winch, fit the body to the chassis, and cut the hood off. It's late and I'm off to work early in the morning so a few pictures is all I can do tonight.

I completely enclosed the bumper caps but forgot to take a picture before I mounted the winch. Maybe later.
