Default Help me decide

So I am wanting to build another trail truck based off a Toyota Hilux body
Was originally going for the SCX10.2 Builders kit but be swapping with a GCM transfer case setup and such. The kit also comes with 11.4" WB links (bonus). Only thing is that I am not a fan of the SCX10.2 axles so was going to upgrade anyway

Now comes the Trail King Pro. Out of the box, this looks like this transfer case is very similar to the GCM but plastic shrouds? Also The axles are much better from what I hear. I will need shortened rear links to make the body work

How are you liking the Trail King Pro?

Default Help me decide

I’m just getting started on my SSDTK and I own many 10.2’s. I am an Axial supporter 100%. Consider the SSDTK a complete high end Axial variant right out of the box. I wish this kit came out before I purchased all my 10.2’s. That’s my honest opinion on the 2 rigs.

I almost bought a trail king but after going through all the parts on it, I'm glad I started with the builders kit. 90% of what's there is upgraded beyond the trail king, mostly with SSD parts that are even upgrades to the trail king.

If I started over, I'd have just bought rails.

I hear you but it’s not about what you don’t get with the SSDTK it’s about what you do get. Lots of nice parts to start with. Yes there is some things you can buy to take the kit even further but they are not based on necessity. Not to mention you can run a full interior and maintain a very nice low COG out the box.

How is the transfer case holding? Is there a limit on pinion size to use? Is it easy to setup the motor mount to mesh pinion properly?

I haven’t ran mine yet but I haven’t seen any issues with the transfer case. I have read of some going down a couple teeth on the pinion but I have not tried it myself. It calls for a 16T pinion and that’s what I am using. Setting up the mesh is a little tricky but it’s not overly difficult.

As for between the 10.2 and TK I would suggest the TK. You get some very nice upgrades over the 10.2 right in the box with the TK. I would bet that once you upgrade a 10.2 you will be over the price of a TK.

Not taking away from the TK at all, afterall, it's essentially what I've got, just upgraded.

My point is that if you want the steel tubes, better shocks, overdrive gears, better shock hangers, etc etc etc, you can build a cheaper upgraded TK by NOT starting with the TK.

The gcm raises your cog quite a bit compared to the trail king trans.

As far as gearing and pinion changes I read you can probably drop it 2 teeth.
