| Pinion gear issue
I'm building the SSD Trail King and when getting to the assembly of the transmission, and attaching it to the motor, i ran into an issue, I opted to run the Hobbywing 550 AXE which has a 5mm shaft. The 16T gear that comes in the SSD kit has the smaller hole and will not mount to the shaft. I found 16Ts with 5mm hole however, the gear is much larger than the kit gear. What am I missing?

Definitely bought the incorrect gear. It was not a 48p. So now, I cannot locate a 48p, 16t gear with a 5mm bore. I guess I need to rethink my choice of motor.

Wait till you install the motor and trans into the truck and realize the front upper link mount doesn't play well with many 550's.

Any recommendations on motor and esc? I bought the Hobbywing 550 AXE combo but might now keep that for another build.

As a guy with an AXE 550 in a 12lb TRX-4 Defender-- which will easily do 25mph in 2nd gear-- I can say with some confidence that's WAY too much motor for a Trail King. Get yourself a HW 1080WP and a nice 27+ turn brushed 540. Tons of options out there. Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket... actually, that wouldn't matter. Most every sensored brushless combo is out of stock right now. Plenty of brushed stuff available though. |

May I recommend a nice Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 16T? A very affordable, smooth motor that will work perfectly in your Trail King.

I did not like the 13t cm sport in mine. I would like to try the 16t. I feel like it would be more suited to the gear ratio of the tk Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

SSD TK gearing... Just finished the chassis with HH Crawlmaster Expert 16T. It really is rather too fast, so went looking for gearing options and I'm guessing there aren't any, so you have to change out the motor? I tend to like them as slow rock crawlers, this thing is way faster than walking speed. Suggestions?? |

If you want to keep the 16T motor I’d look into limiting the throttle percentage on the 1080. IIRC, it has 4 preset percentage options. Try 75% or maybe even 50% depending on how slow you want it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I know I found one. my rig rungs great. Its POSSIBlE I was able to use the Robinson 17t 48p 5mm bore pinion, but I'm sure its a 16t. I have a Hot Racing 48p 16t with a 5mm/1/8th insert. Then I bought a 14t of the same. The 16t in in the package so I had to have installed the 14t pinion in my Redneck Blazer. here are the titles of the ebay purchases. Hot Racing 14t Steel 48p Pinion Gear 5mm or 1/8 NSG814 Traxxas Stampede XL-5 Hot Racing 16t Steel 48p Pinion Gear 5mm or 1/8in NSG816 So you can get a pinion.

I played with all of the settings and it's much better. Lowered everything, set forward speed at 75% and reverse at 25% and it WAY better. Can live with it now. I had a Reedy 5-slot 20T motor in my cart...think I'll wait till I run it in the rocks. It's a really nice kit - all of the stock upgrades are great. Alloy shocks, titanium links, scale trans, good plastic, it went together super easy. Really like it a lot.

| Re: Pinion gear issue I should have my new TK build running in a day or two. We're doing a HH TorqueMaster Pro 540 45T with 12T and OD transfer case. We'll see how all that adds up. Should be a pretty slow crawl I would think. Did as much in metal as I could find. I'll try 1.9's first. If I want 2.2's there will be a couple of small mods. My Jeep body (yet to be received) may need the 2.2's as it's a 1/6 scale. (April 1: Received the Jeep body and it looks like it's a perfect fit for the TK and the 1.9's look like they will work as well). Last edited by Ots; 04-01-2022 at 05:17 PM. |
