~53 willys DLux Style Super Berg~

I've wanted to build a super since before I ever built a 2.2 but since none of the local clubs run them it has been hard to justify the cost...but after getting pretty board with 1.9's I could not resist...
I had full intentions of building a super bully they are flat out beef and don't need $400 just in axle shafts to make them competitive..but after driving with dlux a ton these last few months he swayed me to try a berg with his tubes and parts....

With state champs in a few weeks I'm going to have to make this a 2 part build...the 1st part is just to get me going for state champs..part 2 will be all the things I don't have time to do now.

Part 1
Specs go like this
Chassis is a 53 willys pick up with an extended cab custom cut by dlux fab
Super bergs
Dlux super berg upper link mount
Dlux clear gear covers
Berg Super 300's front and rear with HD pins
SDS 3rd's
Vp knuckles
Sevn knuckle weights
7980 front
Hitec robo servo rear
Banzai 35t
2x BRXL esc's
Dlux TI links
Shocks axial xr10
Hpi blast wheels machined like CI with VP slw hubs
7.75 Sedona fronts
7.75 BC's rear

I knew I wanted to try the truck looking chassis...my 1:1 is a 53 willys pick up and I figured I would try and copy some of the willys lines...I really wanted it to be a single cab...BUT the cab would have been sooo short I think it would have hurt me so I added the extended section...I drew it up on some paper then gave it to erik and let him work his magic on it...

my inspiration...

some old school sketching..:ror:

this is kinda a proto cut chassis...we did delrin 1st so we can work the bugs out...then we are going to cut it from some thin CF:twisted:
1/32" skid:shock::twisted:

No Bullys Mark? You need a time out!!!

:lmao:

53 willys 10-15-2011 08:22 AM

John It might turn into a bully if these bergs don't hold up:ror:...even with super 300 they still seem a bit sketchy if you ask me... I bought the axles used and they already had a broken HD pin:shock:
I don't beat me rigs but reliability is important to me..I know bully's are super reliable..

adamargue 10-15-2011 08:27 AM

Looks good man like that a lot.

Nah!!!
You'll have it down in no time!!!
I was finally starting to get a feel for driving mine after only 2 packs.

It's more of a mental thing.
Just stop thinking about it and drive.

Once you get over how awesome rear steer is, it gets easier. :ror:

I narrowed my blast wheels at work....of course if you have lathe access it makes life much easier!!
need to thank super shafty for the great how to vid...and CI for the machined lip and vp hub ideas"thumbsup"

some metric bolt action and thick fender washers...

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r/1f39f297.jpg

cut the outer lip off..

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r/cf2fa1bf.jpg

mark your next cut with some tape just like super shafty's vid"thumbsup"
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r/ad6f4658.jpg

machine a lip the same width as the bead surface you cut off....not pretty....but should be SUPER strong and it works great!!!
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r/7b113245.jpg
perfect!!
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r/bb722915.jpg

now its time to add the vp hubs...
I used a 90* angle air grinder and a sanding disk to sand off the 17mm hex

Sick Start for a super, Nice work so far."thumbsup"

Looks like a great start to something I have never seen before, great looking chassis Idea, looks to be a one of a kind.

Illeagle 10-16-2011 11:37 AM

Wow thats a great list of parts this thing should be awesome.

I especially like the looks of your chassis since it is different from all the ones you see but do you think you will get a lot of flex in the area between the rear of the cab and the rear shock mounts? It looks a bit thin and may be susceptible to breakage in that area with the kind of weight/falls supers have to endure.

thank you for the nice words8)

yes I'm very concerned about flex with this delrin version...the original thought was that if Dlux cuts this from CF it will be stiff and ridged enough.. the delrin was just a cheaper way to test the cut/chassis...I'm pretty sure I will end up having the CF version cut with full rear section not cut out on the sides like the delrin...and I will also be adding some extra braces back there...but I will go ahead and get the mock up done with the delrin version for now...."thumbsup"

Dont take anything too literal in this thread. 53 is just doing a great job at being a test dummy for most of these parts. That chassis youre looking at is a VERY early prototype. In fact, its the first one ever cut. A lot could change with that chassis and a lot of the parts you could see in his posts. Everything should be good and figured out just in time for me to build my super. LOL

53 willys 10-18-2011 11:51 AM

Started mocking up some links....I really need to get moving if I want to have this done in time....Those rear uppers are 8.5" eye2eye!!! its gonna take a lot of TI to make these links!!
