Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Alright, I'm new to rc crawling and decided to get an exceed mad torque about a week ago. I figure I might as well start a build thread to at least document my work.

This will definitely be a budget build do to me being a college student and also fixing up a volkswagon for my DD, but it'll be a build nonetheless.

I started with a stock MT and quickly decided the cog was way to high and that the foam sucked. I ended up completely removing the foam (for now, I haven't had a chance to cut new foam yet) and slamming it on it's nuts and adding wheel weights.

Right after I got done lowering it the servo decided to burn up so I ordered a solar d772 and am waiting on it to get here before I work on more.

Future plans are cutting the bottom of the chassis off, relocating the battery by the electronics and beating the crap out of it.

Also, this build is heavily inspired by blue collar mods.

This is how it sits now, everything below the bottom links is coming off and I also trimmed the body a ton

After driving it around a bit I decided I needed to relocate the battery asap, so that's what I did. It's only held down with double sided 3m tape right now, but it works fine because I only have the one battery.

With the body, I think it's just at or slightly over 3 inches of gc.

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Alright so I got a 3s lipo for a good deal and really want to run it. Now I know the stock esc can't handle it so I'm looking the outcry dual motor esc with bec along with the Novak smart stop. Are there any other escs out there for a similar price that's just as good or better?

I would suggest an fxr, then when you want to do rear steer get another fxr so you have all the ability of dual esc. My other suggestion would be do the same thing with a brxl!

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

I could see getting the brxl, but does it have a lipo cutoff built in? I liked the outcry cause I can get it and a cutoff for under $100.

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

They both do! The brxl has a great drag break, that's why it's used a lot on the supers!"thumbsup"

Sweet, I'll look into it more. I like everything being built in a lot better, less wires.
It's the torque master brxl correct?

Yup, I'm building an exceed axles super right now for a friend and I will be suggesting the same esc's for him!"thumbsup"

So the shocks just slide on the links? Doesn't sound very stable, also only my rear shocks are mounted on the links. The fronts are mounted on the axle.

So I've been looking at the brxl and it seems really complicated, also I'm not sure how you'd wire it up for dual motors. (I know you can I just don't understand yet.)
I do like that it can run any lipo I'd ever want, just all the programming and wiring has me a little worried.
I get the wiring now, little lead of of the + and - with a Y connector. Connect esc + to front motor + and rear motor -, then esc - to front motor - and rear motor +. So what about the programming?

Crawled around a big wood pile yesterday for a couple hours and didn't break anything so that good. My uncle broke a knuckle, he's also running a 400oz servo though.
Cleaned up my wiring a little and also got some reusable zip ties for my battery. Now need to decide if I want to cut the whole hood off or not, it hits the wiring.

Ya need to limit that flex a little! That much flex will just get you into trouble.

Those pictures weren't mine. My flex is limited so I don't get into trouble :)

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Another question guys. Just installed my solar d772 servo and it's way better than stock. But I'm curious, how many volts does the stock esc send to the servo?
Also I read that people were running a 3s lipo with the stock servo. If I do this with no external bec will it hurt my servo, or does the stock esc have a bec type thing?

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

all modern esc's have a built in bec. most only put out 5v. i know for fact the solar servo will cause a brown out in the esc, without using a external bec.i have 4 trucks running them

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Ok since you're saying it causes a brown out can I run more voltage to stop it? Such as a 3s lipo? Or will the servo steal the voltage either way?

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Quick question. On the three gears in the axle, the gears that go through those, are they the same as the pinion gear?
I snapped the middle gear one screwing around with a 3s lipo on some carpet lol.

Re: Mad torque build, cheap and easy

Scratch that I found out what it is. Are there any other gears that interchange with it? It's the 12t that's out of stock right now
