My clone

So, I picked up an HG P407 a couple weeks ago and after driving it once, I decided to make some mods.
First, it's been pointed out how similar this is to the Re-Re. One thing I'd like to add to the list is that the radio box doesn't have the rubber guard where the steering and shift rods exit.
No pics, but the stock radio is garbage. Constantly loses bind and started backing up by itself right before I replaced it. I have a 4PLS that runs the lifted F-350, so picked up another receiver and dropped it in. At the same time, the shift servo crapped out, so replaced it with the stock steering servo, which is digital BTW (forgot the model number) and a Traxxas large servo saver. For steering, I have a Savox SC-1257TG that must've came out of my SC10 a few years ago, along with an alloy arm. Luckily, the radio lets me slow the thing down. Before I figured that out, I had already ordered a DS3218. I have a Hot Racing aluminum steering pivot being delivered tomorrow to replace the stock plastic one. Right now, I don't plan on a front mount servo.
I also replaced the ESC with an HW WP1080.
Rear axle is locked and I heard that Axial shaft screws are the same size, so got a bag of those to lock the front too. Anyone use Racer's Edge Diff Putty?
I have a couple sets of RC4WD hex kits coming and I'm thinking of getting a set of LURC wheels with a double set of spacers. Maybe next month.
Since threads are worthless without pics....
I've never liked the sleeper that comes on the Bruiser, so picked up a Reign RC half-back from RPP to 'convert' it to a Mountain Rider. Only slight mods were required to the lower corners of the body for it to fit. It's glued/welded in using Testor's liquid cement. The window isn't in yet, as I do want to eventually paint this thing.

The stock tires are very stiff. No foams, and only the rear bead is glued. I got a set of Rock Claws to replace them. I'd love to find a set of 2.2 Flat Irons, but these should work.

After...

They're about the same width but about 1/4" taller.
More later....

Re: My clone

Hey man to bad about the shift servo, i have only ran 2 packs through mine, but i haven't had problems with any eletronics(yet) , i do have a 1080 esc waiting to be installed and a much better servo for steering, although i am definetly going with frame mounted option as my og hilux. The axial shaft screws fit the diffs? i ordered a bag and have to take the diffs apart again as i only had traxxas set screws and those wont fit. i am ordering some hex adapters from rc4wd as they are back in stock. And thanks for letting me know these are 2.2 wheels , my mind was set these wheels were tlt style with different rim diameter front and back:oops:

Re: My clone

It looks much better with those tires!

I'll be watching this thread because I've been wanting one of these clones.

Re: My clone

Got the HR aluminum pivot today and installed it. Through no fault of the new part, but because the, ahem, young chinese gentleman (or gentlewoman) either didn't pay attention or does know how to read a ruler, I had to adjust all 3 links in the steering system. Only broke one rod-end. Being a Tamayi (see what I did there?) :), I had a few lying around.
Anyway, steering is much better now and I have equal throw in both directions.
My hex conversions came in, but I'm going to wait until I get wheels and do the conversion, lock the front diff and remove a leaf all at the same time. So I'm not positive the Axial screws will work, but they are the same size on paper.

Re: My clone

Got back from a trip to Chicago and dove in.
The clone doesn't use splined axles, so I took a file to the RC4WD kit to make them fit. I could've bought a genuine part off ebay, but money.

Doing the rear axle...
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4535-66510.jpg

Done... only stripped one bolt. Had to drill it out. Replaced with a 2mm screw from the stash

Front axles from the RC4WD kit. I thought ahead and bought 2 kits. Good thing, since one of the hexes stripped just looking at it.

Stock front axles...

How the stock chubs are attached to the knuckles
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4535-66514.jpg

Front is done. I can confirm that the Axial set screws work to lock the front differential, with a little finessing. Nothing major, just had to take the front axle apart to get everything lined up. The axles were greased, which made it hard to see WTF I was doing.

Now waiting for wheels. Or, one night in East L.A.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4535-66516.jpg

Rear axle hex to hex is 209mm. Front is 194mm. I'm going to get a set of LURC 2.2 Ikari's, but they're out of wideners at the moment. The plan is to get 2 for each wheel, to get them close to the stock wheel width of 44mm. For the rears, one outside, one inside. The fronts will have two outside. This will even the track width front to back (within 1 mm). I'm not sure of what hubs to get though, since the way SLW hubs are measured makes absolutely no sense to a normal human being. Who measures to the end of the hub, not the face of the hex? That's a rhetorical question, BTW.
I also removed the small leaf from the stack.

Re: My clone

Got wheels. 2.2 Ikari's with not one, not two, but THREE wideners. 185 and 475 hubs evened out the track width to within a couple mm. I probably could've gotten away with 600's up front.

Re: My clone

Hi Jeckler. Great job on the clone mods. Would you be able to share the links to the RC4WD front and rear kits w/ 12mm hex and Axial pin to lock diff for your mods? Very interested in making similar mods to my clone. I currently put hub adapters purchased on eBay. Unfortunately, it makes the axles way too wide. Your guidance will be much appreciate. Thanks.

Re: My clone

The pins are Axial AXA0175.
The hex conersion is here:
https://store.rc4wd.com/12mm-Hex-con...12_p_2504.html

However, I suggest you don't lock the front axle. The resulting steering radius is horrible and I got one tire just slightly wedged in a hole and snapped a stub axle. I've read the the conversion axles aren't that great. I've also read that Super Blackfoot axles can be used, but those are getting harder and harder to find too.

Re: My clone

Thanks much Jeckler! Can I use this kit on the front axle too? I’m assuming so. The kit says rear. Also, where does the Axial pin go/replace? I will only be locking the rear as you suggested. Apologize for dumb questions in advance as I'm still learning about RC’s. Trying to figure out how to post some pictures of my mods. So far, I moved the steering servo up front for much faster and accurate response. Also fabricated mount for bumpers. Removed a leaf spring. Just trying to make this rig crawler worthy. Thanks again!

Re: My clone

The kit fits both ends. The new rear axles for the... rear, and the new stubs replace the existing ones up front.
The pin goes inside the diff. The manual should show how to lock the rear and it should have come with a pin to do it. If missing, the axial ones should work.

 this sucks, i thought these would work fine, i have both my axles locked, now i dont know if i should risk the adpater kit...

Is this the aluminum steering pivot your talking about?
for Tamiya Bruiser #TBR4808, ,(TBR4808) by Hot Racing Aluminum Ball Bearing Steering Kit Silver

Re: My clone

Yep. I got mine from Amazon, but it looks like they're no longer available.

Re: My clone

Mine came in put it in and wow what’s difference. I also changed my servo and esc to the hobbywind 1080 with programmer . I’m waiting on a set of factory Tamiya bruiser wheels as the stock backs of the wheels just crumbled when I put the screws through. They will be here today. I get conflicting answers are the tires 1.9 or 2.2 and so you have a link for those tires you put on?

Jeckler 09-25-2019 08:07 AM

Re: My clone

They're 2.2 Losi Rock Claws. No idea where I actually bought them from, probably Amazon.

Nice wheel and tire choice. It looks awesome!

Re: My clone

Can you run it without the trailing arms on the rear.
