Poor Mans Berg

Ok I had to build one.... My old 2.2 clod was a blast and I am trying to see if I can make a 2.2 clod competative with bergs.... I literally only have 35 bucks into building this! Everything else I either traded stuff I got for free or recycled. I put on the electroncs off my comper to test....

Specs
-Home brew tortion chassi
-Madlands on narrowed pede wheels(Moab sidewalls maxx badland tread that --Mitch made)
-9/16th's washer lockout in the rear
-5955tg servo
-Hand Brothers BTA Steering
-Sidewinder
-Dual 55t motors in parallel
-Shaved knuckles
-DX3R
-CCBEC
-Old school servo to pull the rear brush for dig.

I plan to do a switch box for F/R dig soon.... This will just help me get her set up and see if I like it.

When I got the pile....:D Sweet chassi huh?

A lot of chopping and carving goin on here. Hope it works for you if you are trying to be a formadible competitor.
Good luck my friend....:)

Lets see some in comp. pics. when you have time.

Way to go chris"thumbsup", kick some butt with that clod..and take some berg's names while you are at it:lol:, cool looking rig btw, i actually had 2.2 pimp cane built a couple years ago but i never even drove it, i was having too much fun with the super pimp cane at the time.

Good use of extra parts. I really like the chicks in bikinis that is good motivation for any project!!!

Good to see a budget build....looks sweet!

Hey there

The lack of axle braces on the front axle tube has me a little concerned, you may crack the cases. But I make bad choices at comps.

How wide is it?

Chris_The_Battery_Man 08-04-2008 07:13 PM

its 12-1/4 inches wide at the tire edge. The axle tubes are going to be replaced with aluminum ones once I decide to keep it or go with bergs....

But my first line of business is to kill the clod stall.....

run2jeepn 08-04-2008 07:21 PM

60t with 8t Pinions on 11.1v Lipo... Works on my 2.2 Clod Very well... That or run Dual ESC with a DX6... but even when I ran that on my 2.2. I had my front start turning just a little before the Rear. Built in Pre-Clod stall kind of. I'd make a new Backbone. That one won't last.

TwistedCreations 08-04-2008 07:30 PM

Chris, with shaving that backbone like that, it will possibly fail at those sections(been there done that) in a fall. Also the twisting motion will fatigue it as well.

I have ran my own hybrid backbone for sometime now and love the setup, as it has alot of pro's to it. I'll see if I can dig up some pics for you as well.

Also, I made custom axles and tubes to get my width down to 10 1/4" wide, but had recently seen Integy makes custom tubes and such to get you down to that width also. http://www.integy.com/cgi-bin/webc.c...64&p_catid=107

With being so narrow now, the torsion style really suffers as you lose your leverage with the loss of the width..

Looks good none the less "thumbsup"

run2jeepn 08-04-2008 07:36 PM

I have One set of the Tubes and Knuckles that I'd make you a deal on. I bought them just to check them out. They come with Knuckles, Tubes, bearings, and axle Shafts.

TwistedCreations 08-04-2008 07:43 PM

Yep, they came out a couple weeks after I called you about making some J

The ones that twisted creations was talking about that integy makes? That would be sweet. I would love a narrower wheel base so I could put smaller tires on. But the catch is that it would have to be uber cheap because I get cost on alot of stuff.... Or maybe you need batteries/chargers wink wink nudge nudge:lol: PM me details none the less

Grizzly4x4 08-05-2008 09:14 AM

Looks great Chris, I love seeing 2.2 Clods. "thumbsup" I am also a bit worried about the strength of the backbone where you cut the channel. However, it should last long enough for you to decide if you want to keep it I imagine.

I never knew about the Integy tubes, that's some good info.

Fishmaxx 08-05-2008 10:02 AM

Had something similar, but in a stick style. Crawled over everything on its path including gates

You will need to get down to at least 11 inches to keep it from being a gate magnet"thumbsup"

Nabil 08-05-2008 10:29 AM

does your dig servo pull the brush out of the motor?

dezfan 08-05-2008 10:34 AM

Looking good. I did well w/ my 2.2 Pimp Cane for 2 seasons. Like the others have stated, you need to get it as narrow as possible to make gate clearance better.

You may also consider reversing the rear axle. It will greatly increase the ability to clear ledges as the rear motor doesn't get hung up.

Here is a pic to show how I had mine set up.

Yes...

Dezfan...

Sweet ride. I just dont like having stuff hanging off the back. I would love to narrow the WB alot because its too wide. Fortunately I have mo comper around for this weekends comp. This is too much of a pile for now...:)

If you notice, the motor is just about even w/ the rear of the back bone. I didn't think I would like it, but compare the shot of your bare chassis and axles to the one I posted and look at the placement of the motor. Even w/ Maxx sized Badlands the first thing that comes into contact w/ an obstacle is the motor and or the case.

Good luck!"thumbsup"

Chris_The_Battery_Man 08-05-2008 11:08 AM

Yeah you're right there. But I think I tried it and I didn't like how it would hang up on the axle when you went up something steep. It didnt happen often. But I ran a clod this way with 2.2 tires for a whole season and loved it. But I already see this being turned into a super...

jagg 08-06-2008 12:48 PM

Nice build "thumbsup". I'm just finising up a few loose ends on a similar build of my own. Not going to narrow mine though, no comps any where close. Just wanted to build a 2.2 version to see how they handle.
