Default Project Xerox (If you can't beat them, join them!)

Well here it is, the beginings of Project Xerox (If you can't beat them, Join them)......

After competeing against a couple "Sticks" and getting beat on a couple courses I decided that if I was going to maintain my lead and my 1st place position for 2005 season in ORCRC Unlimited Class, I was going to have to make a major change to the Clod. My clod simply didn't have the clearance I needed in certain situations where the stick was better....

So first thing was to order the main components that I need for the main structure of the Stick Xerox Copy.

Lightweight Nylon Ball Joint Rod End
7/16"-20 Right-Hand Male Shank, 89 lb Load Capacity
Nylon Composite Ball Joint Rod End, 7/16-20 UNC Male
http://www.mcmaster.com/ #1064K551, $8.15 ea, (2) req'd

Alloy 6063 Aluminum Round Tube .563" OD, .327" ID (.118 Wall), 8' Length
http://www.mcmaster.com/ #1658t47, $8.72 ea, (1 Stick) req'd

18-8 SS Button Head Socket Cap Screw 3/8"-24 Thread, 1-1/2" Length
http://www.mcmaster.com/ #92949a655, $6.50/pkg, (1) pkg req'd

So thats about $32 is just the basic materials... I should also say by NO means am I copying Kevin design for resale. And you can't beat the price Kevin is selling "The Stick" for since it comes with everything you need and all you have to do is put it together. But for me, I didn't need the complete package, plus I like building my own junk. Also I'm not making a perfect copy of his design. I've also taken NO dimensions for an actual stick so my design is just from the info and pictures I've taken or seen on the web. And my thanks goes out to Kevin for making this deisgn so popular that I had to copy it for myself.......

So I tore my old clod down and started laying it out.....

As you can see the major design change is that I'm putting a hump into the backbone so with Gaint Tracs and a 16" wheelbase I can go up a 16" vertical obstical with a 90 degree break over. well in the end this actuall turned out to be about a 85 degree break over but thats close enough.

So then I basically threw the rest of it together to make sure everything would work like I wanted it too plus I was waiting for a few little items like body mounts and a servo extension.

So heres so pictures during testing.

And here is it basically finished! I got the real body mounted, real ESC, Receiver and Battery mounts made instead of the velco and zip ties that I was using for my early testing... I also put so "Go Fast" holes in it it lighten it up some. So far I really like it.......

Overall shot

Naked Shot

Battery Tray which will accept all types of batteries and keep them secure

Receiver mount

Rear Steer

Antenna

Front Servo

Ground Clearance

I'll take that as a compliment.... When the build-off was starting - I wasn't planning on totally redoing my clod at that time. Plus to me this doesn't really seem build off worthy since its basically just a copy.

I have two servos on the rear because during normal climbing situations on rock faces, most of the weight is on the rear tires, hence you need more steering power becasue the frictional forces between the tire and the ground are higher. F = mu * N. Also if you are on a slight side hill the rear wheels has a tendancy to force the steering all the way to one direction (well they did with my last chassis). With this I have double the holding power and double the steerign power so I can actually steer the rear tires in these situations now...

Thanks guys. I got a chance to run about 3 battery packs through it over the weekend until I stripped a servo gear! Argh..... It works really well and I took alot of video. I'm going to try to get some video of it up later this week.

The shocks are these with white springs:
DuraTrax Shock Set Rear Assembled Evader ST (2)
Tower's Low Price 15.49

Looks great, with your dual rear steer setup which Y harness did you need? reversed or standard?

I just used a standard Y-harness in the back because both servos turn the same direction to steer. And yes, I have independent steer.

Here is a 3min long video of Project Xerox at Spring Park, Portland OR......Seems to work pretty good to me. But I still wish the Gaint Tracs had softer sidewalls....

Great ride. Have you noticed a quicker drain on your battery? i had the dual setup on my Revo (Dare I sy it here lol) and noticed them occasionally working against each other. Usually when it was glitching. Are those standard servos or hitorque? Again way to do it yourself.

The servos are high torque blue birds..... I haven't noticed any more power drain but I really don't drive the RC's that much to have a good comparision......
