| Cable Drive Steering, Single Plane Chassis
The truck: -Clod axles -55t lathe motors -hobbico cs-80 (343 oz-in of torque) -custom links -custom tig welded chassis -cable steering -3300 radio shack batteries -batteries mounted under the hubs -novak super rooster -traxxas 3ch with rear steer switch (modded tq3) I drove it around the basement with 4 cell hooked up. It would climb up most things. The problem with it so far is it has too much articulation (more than 90deg). I will take some of the articulation out when I get the wiring all figured out to run all 8 cells. I sent an email to novak to figure out the wiring, so hopefully they respond by monday. So now the pics: Last edited by EeePee; 03-18-2006 at 09:49 PM. |

Let's take that thing out this weekend and see what happens. Then try to get rid of some of that ghetto fab. |

Not sure this pic will help you w/ the wiring or not?:? Hope it will! The cable steering looks innovative, but overly complicated. Why not mount the servos on the axle braces?:? I will be following this build as it is pretty interesting! |

Watching the steering do it's thing is really cool. Cool like no other. Once he gets off his butt and finishes it up you can expect to see video of it. | |

that looks like a 1/4 scale servo and if it is they do fit on the axle, but it is tight.

| The first initial outing……Well nothing broke so that is good. The steering worked without any problems. To get around my wiring problems I added a cell to each front hub. So that is 6 cells up front and 4 in the back. The front 6 run the motors, the esc, and the rec. The rear 4 cells run the servos only. These 10 sub c batteries make for a heavy truck. The truck weights in at 10.5 lbs. I think I may have found my wiring problem too. It seems like there is a bad servo plug in the Y harness for the servo batteries. I am just going to hard wire them to get rid of the harness all together. If I fix that then I can take 2 cells off of the front to save some weight. Driving impressions: The truck is very floppy. To fix that I am going to change the 30wt shock oil to 80wt. I am also going to put stock clod springs on the shocks, which are stiffer than the stock double dare duratrax shock springs that I am using now. I am also going to change where the shocks mount. I started with the shocks in A then moved to B which was better. But now I am going to move them to C which will also lower the truck. I think the height of the truck is making it floppy by having to high of a cg. The motor leads are also to short. They were limiting the suspension movement. So I am going to mount the esc on the rear axle support. This will also lower the cg, protect the esc better, and shorten the motor leads. The picture shows the wire in tension at A. I also attached some pictures of the batteries inside the hubs. |

| Test 2: The floppiness is gone. It works pretty well for the second try! The rear motor stalls more than it should, so I am going to put an 8 tooth on the rear and keep the 9 tooth up front. The tires might need some foams and more vents in the wheels. The servo battery switch broke some how. I thought it was protected well enough but I guess not. The lower link mounts also bent. I thought they might because they are in single shear. I came up with a X brace that is going to go from shock tower to opposite lower link and vise versa, then connect in the middle. Eventually the X will become the new chassis. There will be a video soon….maybe tonight. |
