Default Are aluminum gears worth it?

The rear axle in my Clod is clickng. I am assuming one of the gears is stripping, because I haven't pulled it apart yet. It still works a little. I clicks under heavy load. Is it worth it to get the aluminum gear set from RC4WD.com, or should I just get the stock replacements?

If you have the cash, go for it. I don't think it's worth it, but I'm cheap!

first off, do you have bearings or bushings? If you have bushings you are wasting your time with any aluminum gears. Any gear will strip if you have bushings.

Get stock replacements. I thrashed my clod and never stripped a gear- with full ball bearings.

I'm pretty sure it has bearings, but I haven't been inside to check. I think I will get the stock gears first and check to see if it has full bearings. If it strips again, I'll get the aluminum ones.

I'd go with a Tracgear diff locker. The diff gear was always the one to give out under high torque. After I put the trac gear in all of my striping problems went away. You really only need one for the rear, the front can't put out enough torque to strip.

I agree completely. You don't need the full aluminum set.

You can always go with Inet's diff locker kit. It's two plates that bolt together where the spider gears go. So at least you are still running nylon gears on nylon gears rather then aluminum to nylon.

True, but I've found that setup to be a little weak. The open area in the gear where the spider gears and the pin used to be causes the teeth in those areas to have no support.

I have personally broke 2 gears, both in that area, between 2 teeth. One in the front diff and 1 in the back. Replaced them with the Tracgears and never had another problem.

Of course, It could be the driver...

Before you spend any money check to make sure your gear mesh is correct. It could be set to loose.

The gear mesh for the differential is not adjustable.

You think? All he said was the rear axle was clicking. I didn't have my gear mesh tight enough on my clod once and it did the same thing. On flat ground it would be fine but when it had some tourqe on the rear axle it would click.

The gear mesh was bad. I bought the clear cover because adjusting it with the black ones was impossible. I also added the aluminum locker. Bearings were already installed. That axle should be good to go now.

I managed to completely strip the front centre on mine. I am now making a set of alloy centres, that will fix it.

Cheers,. Brad.

i had the some problem with the plastic gear wearing out to fast from the pinion gear so switch to the rc4wd locker gear and shot some lithium gear grease it the gear box and had no problems since.
