Default locked diffs - trac gear problem

Hi all

I've just bought two trac gears from RC4WD for my crawler project, they seem really popular. I've tried fitting them, but they just don't feel right when they're in. The gearbox isn't smooth after they're fitted. There appears to be no clearance at all where the teeth of the trac gear meet the gear that normally drives the diff. It's like they've been made just slightly too large, though the teeth mesh fine with the teeth on the normal diff gears so I think the teeth profile is right.

So, I've got a question for all of you. Is this normal, and they just bed-in with use, or have I got a set of duff gears? Does everybody get this problem, but just haven't talked about it on any of the forums I've looked at? I'd really hate to have a duff set as I'm in the UK, and sending them back will be a pain for me and Hua at RC4WD.

I'd be grateful for any advice...

I've got them fitted now, but had to do a little fiddling. It involved putting a shim between over the end of the hex drive that goes in to the trac gear so that the width of the assembled diff/spool was the same as the stock diff when measured across the edges of the hex drives, as I noticed that the hex drives went further in to the trac gear than they do on the stock bevel gears.

They're fitted now and the gearboxes are reasonably smooth, but still a little noisy. The trac gears are a smaller diameter than stock, but only by 0.1 millimetres so the noise must be caused by a slightly non-conforming tooth profile so I'm hoping that I'll notice a lessening of the noise as the truck gets used...

And RC4WD have been fine for me. I'm very pleased with the Monstertech TLT chassis, the gecko II chassis and the other bits and pieces I've had from them. And they post to the UK within a week and accept PayPal which is just great as good UK R/C hobby shops are few and far between, and specialist truck shops are non-existent. Perhaps you've just been unlucky?

Thanks for your help, all.

Glad you got it to go. My problem w/ RC4wd isn't the quality of their products or anything.... My issue is every time I have tried to order something they were out of stock on it, and they weren't very straight up about it. They told me they would be in in 3 days, then a week, then two weeks and so on. But I wont rant here.. They're do have great products and pretty good prices, im just sorta displeased.
