| Clod Axle Widening
Just got out of the basement finishing up my Clod axle widening project, thought I'd share some pics. This is something Grizzly and I have been wanting to do for a long long time. Grizz has some ideas that will require far less machining. I think his way will be cool, but I'll let Grizzly show ya his ideas when he's done with them Here are the parts: I made the little ball ends for the "dogbone" u-joints. I had to make the radius turning attachment for my lathe to do it! The spacer parts hold the inner bearing and space the axle out about 1" a side: (actually it's .980" a side Here's the assembled axle showing how W I D E it is. I hope this mod will help what I feel is one of the clods biggest problems, manuverablilty. The stock clod does okay, but when you widen the axles byusing wheel spacers and offset wheels you increase the "scrub radius". Most shafties have a much better scrub radius and they seem to manuver better than clods... This method of widening moves the steering pivot back more towards the center of the wheel. I also expect the steering servos to work better. We'll see. |

Good idea on the axles, those welded together ones weren't doing it for me! Are your inners at least as strong as stock? Inch per side sounds like a good number. If you need someone to REALLY test those suckers, PM me |

The inners are tool steel. Should hold up just fine For sale? Probably not. These were a PITA to make! I'll have to think about it but I doubt anyone would be willing to pay what I'd have to charge! |

I was thinking of a very similasr idea to widen mine. I would appreciate a set of drawings for the axles. I could even get a few sets made up if others were interested. Awsome conversion.... |

Mnster, Going from memory it's 5mm. I ordered 5mm from McMaster Carr I think. I do remember it's o-1. I had experience with W-1 drill rod and wondered about the machinability of O-1. They both machine similar... W-1 is tough to get a really nice finish on, especially threads. It was a little oversized (maybe .0005) and was a tight press on the bearings. I wanted a nice running slip so I just sanded it in the lathe. Crash, All those parts were done on a Sherline lathe and mill. Very good equipment for this hobby. |
