1st Clod Build(s) - Ripper Race Clod and ZRP Diablo

I've been collecting parts and between working on the crawlers and selling off some stuff, I've managed to pull this together. Hoping to get some practice runs under my belt soon..
The body came with the chassis, so I'm going to use it as a practice body. Thinking 80's monster truck style for the new body..
Specs...
Ripper chassis, clod axles, Crawford performance engineering 4-link mounts, ESP 14t motors, Holmes Hobbies BRXL speed controller X 2, Castle BEC for future servo duties, all running off my Futaba 4pl.
Modded some axial shocks to use, we'll have to see how they work out.
As soon as I get my mill going again, I'm going to fab up a battery plate, to put the 2s lipo flat in the chassis, and hopefully keep her rubber side down.
Enough jabber, on to the pics, hopefully a little video of her running around the yard tomorrow. Might even strap the go-pro on there and go for a monster truck ride.

And since I am a crawler guy, the obligatory flex shot.

Beautiful looking Ripper. Makes me miss the one I use to have and race with. Just keep an eye on the lower links where the shocks mount. I found that after time they would start to bow.

That is a sweet Ripper....nice dual brushed setup too. Should really scream when you get it running

I love race clods. I have wanted one for years but have always held back since I have never found anyone to race with.

Re: 1st Clod Build - Ripper Race Clod...

Thanks for the suggestion maverick0, when I got the truck home I noticed one of the rears didn't exactly look straight. Looked closer and sure enough it was bent about 1/8" end to end.
So I put it in the vise over night, with a round piece of brass to keep it tight to the jaw.. Next day she was straight as an arrow.
I have some ideas for the lower links, just have to draw them up and get them on the mill.

Kingclod27, it hauls a LOT more than I ever thought it would. I've had mod motors in my cars in the past, 16X2, 14X2, all kinds of winds. Those ESP motors put the power down.
I took it out in my driveway, for a quick run and the first time I dropped the hammer from a dead stop, the front tires reached for the sky. They will need a comm cut and some new brushes eventually, so I'll probly ship them off to Holmes Hobbies to have him look them over and give them a freshen up. Am thinking about what we could do with some skewed arms and a wild wind like this.

I just finished up the ZRP Diablo clod last night. That one has dual Tekin RSPros and some of the new GENII 13.5 motors. I hate to say it, but unless I boost those things up a bunch, these old school mod motors are going to smoke the brushless motors.
I think this will be the big/outdoor track truck and the brushless setup will be the small/indoor course truck.

Thank you for the comments and keep your eyes open, there will be some more pics and vids in the future..

Purchased this from Zyck2k over on RCMT.net, can't say thank you enough.
Awesome to deal with and is truly worth the $$..

ZRP Diablo
Twin Tekin RS Pro speed controllers.
13.5 Tekin GEN II motors, for now.
Castle BEC and a Futaba S9157 servo (I know HOLEY OVER KILL)

On to the media...

Sweet rigs!

I have just bought a Ripper just like yours, loving it so far :)

Will be keeping an eye on this to see how you mount your battery plate...

Here you go Simon.
Almost finished battery plate..

Just need to decide if I want to drill and tap the cross members or make some new ones. Might try to find some square aluminum stock...
Anyways. On to the pics.

Sweet looking Clod. I have a Terminator race Clod and I have most of the parts I need to start building a 2nd one for my son to race

Looks good Stu, that's what I had in mind, the square bar is a nice idea think I'll do that as I have some in the workshop.

The only problem I've found is being able slide the battery in, it hits the gearbox and swaybar. How about you?

Sadly all forms of rc racing have dried up in my neck of the woods. Maybe when I move back to AZ ill be able to find some clod racing. If not I'm sure I will end up building my boys and myself a few of them in a few years when they can handle it and we can have some family nostalgia racing.

Looks great Stu, I have a few of those diablos myself (5). Always had a soft spot for the rippers too.

Sweet trucks!

I'd also love a race monster Clod but I don't know of any races in PA. I'd just have to bash with it.

Re: 1st Clod Build - Ripper Race Clod...

Thank you everyone. The dodge body on the ripper will be getting switched out for something, just not sure yet. I have a superduty monster truck body and a Chevy pickup that would also be a good monster truck.. Thinking about what kind of paint scheme to run is the question.

Budhatrain, hope to see you at one of the monster truck events this winter. I've seen some pics of your rigs, definitely some great trucks.
Simon, I forgot to mention, to get the battery in and out of the chassis, I compress the front or rear suspension and it slides right in.
