New guy with an old Clod New guy here. My name's Adam and I recently dug out my old Clod and decided to build it into a crawler. I bought it about 16-18 years ago and messed around with it until I parked it about 5 yrs ago. I built a new chassis for it back around 2001 with CNC cut side plates and cantilever shocks with 3/16" Stainless links. I also made a set of aluminum wheels and grooved the stock tires for better flex. It currently has Trinity 17t motors but I plan on getting 55t crawler motors. The ESC is an old Novak Super Rooster. Servos are Hitec 645MGs. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psic8y9los.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1fsosflq.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psh607bfpu.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psxksbhmmk.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod That is a nice piece! |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Thanks! The R/C scene has changed a lot since I got out of it so I have a lot to learn. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Same here, I got out about 6 years ago and got back in this summer and there are TONS of new things out now. I recommend picking up a couple RC magazines and reading them cover to cover. That is what I am doing. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Nice clod! Clodtalk.com is a great resource for us junkies. Just built a clod crawler myself... Working on a basher now. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod That is a sick looking clod you have built. Looks more like a race clod. Then a crawler. Brings back memories of the old days, with all that flex. Sent From My 2500 HD Tapatalk 2 |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Thanks guys! I did a little more grooving on the tires to make them more flexible and give them more lateral grip with more edges. Now, they kinda look like MT Baja Claws. I chucked them up in my lathe and used a grinding wheel in the Dremel. Snapped a couple pics with the body off to show off the chassis. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...pszpoinq11.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psv5uwksxh.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7rvasjdb.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psorrvvooe.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1xenyscu.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod That is a cool way to groove tires. Wish I know someone that could, do that for me. Sent From My 2500 HD Tapatalk 2 |

Re: New guy with an old Clod That is awesome! Nice work! |
Re: New guy with an old Clod I'm thinking of using the Proline Chevy HD short course body and Proline Super Swamper TSL XL 2.2" tires to give the Clod a semi-scale look. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps8siwgtw3.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psm6whpcgl.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod This is the look I'm after but with the larger short course body and wider Clod axles. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps6oconlll.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Your Clod looks awesome. You have some awesome skills. Those tyres look factory! Chassis is a work of art. Keep the pics coming.... |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Thanks guys. I decided to do away with the cantilevers and link mount the shocks. That will open up the axle braces to give room to mount the steering servos and get the bumper off the front axle. It lost a little articulation but it still has 55*. The zip ties holding the shocks to the links are temporary. I'll machine something more permanent. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9p8gqdty.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psjosuem8u.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psotob8k3s.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Why did you decide to get rid of the cantilever setup? I am wondering because I was planning a sweet cantilever setup for mine. I was going to bearing mount them and everything but if there is a good reason not to go with that type of setup, I'd like to know it now. I don't want to waste a few hours at a Bridgeport and all the aluminum I would use. Thanks. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod I removed the cantilevers to make room on the axles to remount the servos on the axle braces. I also did it to shave weight and simplify things. It also should lower the COG a little by getting the shocks and cantilevers off the top of the chassis. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod I read that but I was thinking there was another reason besides. What are the travel of those shocks? I was thinking a 2:1 ratio on the cantilevers.. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod The shocks are roughly 1" travel. The cantilevers are about 2.5:1 ratio. |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Made some lower shock mounts today. They are held in place with a set screw to allow adjustment on the links. I'll round the corners. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psocj7i1qi.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps3md6r7x9.jpg |
Re: New guy with an old Clod Got a little done today. I used my soldering iron to plastic weld some cracks in the gearboxes around the upper link mounts. Time will tell if it works, but if it doesn't I'll buy new boxes. The servo is remounted on the axle brace. I plan on adding 4WS but I need new knuckles since I shaved the arms off when I went to 2WS. Threw on an old junk body and lowered it down since it has more clearance due to the truck now having less articulation. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psybvh500n.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7pj9ouki.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...pswvyugfjt.jpg http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/a...psl7crqslo.jpg |
