You can buy aluminium links from RC4WD which are pretty strong i got some today for my xmas pressy they look real nice

You could always make a small protective guard for the front, or possibly use the behind the axle steering setup.

If you go into the thread that shows you the pictures of other members trucks, I am sure you could get some ideas from there.
