Default Custom tuber build.

I have a thread going on rcuniverse and decided to put one on here too. This is my first crawler build and I am trying to photograph the process. Im posting to get feedback from more experienced people out there. If you see something and would like to make a suggestion feel free, I would rather fix something now rather than later.... bunch of pics coming, as you can see part way through I hacked off my back end and rebuilt it. waiting on $200 more worth of parts to continue, Ill keep everyone updated --- CHRIS

Yes they are beefy ... and pricey, For both of them fully built out is around $277. I have been buying them in stages as I build. This week I should have enough parts to fully build one axle and the other will have enough to mount the wheels... just not drive them.

Also on order ... or on the wish list:

Axial 8 spoke black wheels (ordered)
Red holley roller rock rings
ESC ... any suggestions, thinking Tekin rebel 2, just looks ugly IMO
Hitec super tourque servos, forgot the #. (just got)
Moab 40 series tires

On the plan .... as you can see in the pics, I have some sheet plastic to give the windows a tinted look, also I am making body panels out of sheet styrene and they will mount under the tubes so you can see the structure. My uncle has a powdercoat setup so we are going to do the frame in "Chevy Orange" the panels will be a good color to go with that ... (any suggestion on panel color??)

Its a work in progress but I will keep my threads updated as often as possible. Thanks in advance for any help

Sounds good so far... The axle's seem bullet proof, so I think its money well spent...

As far as a ESC... I am running a mamba max in my gmade spider and its NICE! So many positive comments/reviews about it I had to give it a try... And being able to program it using my laptop is the best thing since sliced bread IMO...

ok guys I need some help making a decision

I have some really thin sheet steel and was thinking of picking out a few areas to solder in perm. body panels, these would get powder coated with the frame (chevy orange). which ones if any do you guys think would look good??

Also, I want to paint the other panels a good color to go with the orange .. any suggestions??

One more thing, I have the axial 8 spoke wheels on the way, do they come narrow or will I need to narrow them myself???

Very Nice job your doing there man! Your starting out far ahead of others (Like myself, lol)!

Anyway to answer your question... I think you should make some for the front (like a hood) and the back rectangle and the 2 triangles on the side... those are orange with the chassis and the other parts would look good black!

I love those colors together!

Later,
Jake

No I havent got to use them yet ... SHOULD be getting a complete axle in the mail today, and my ESC is on the way ... just need motors after that. As far as I can tell though they are built well, very strong and everything is a nice snug fit. I will post the build up pics of the axle when I get it. Have school till 10pm so hopefully it will be waiting for me when I get home. Knowing me I will stay up all night just to build it.

Saw a video of those axles being driven over by a car. Definitely no worries for strenght. The orange and black would look great together with the tinted shields. Great build so far, lookin' forward to watching this one.

** ORANGE AND BLACK IT IS ** Sounds good to me. thanks for the idea.

Back to another question I have .... the axial wheels, come narrowed or should I narrow them??? I have looked around and see them on peoples build list as "Narrowed Axial Beadlocks" Im thinking these people narrowed the wheels themselves but im not sure.

All right, got the parts in finally, here is the build up .....
The box of goods ....

Lots of parts in there

Started out by putting the knuckles on to the axle I already had built... this axle has no gears still, just made it where I could mount up the wheels when they come in.

Heres the front axle ...

Now I start the rear axle, This one is complete, all gears and everything ...
drive shafts and bearings,

diff parts

all inside

top and bottom

all put together, now time for the knuckles .... Here is what being in a hurry gets you, I saw it and just kind of laughed ... figured i would post it.

all fixed now, servo and bumper installed

now some pics mounted, front is just mocked up, not bolted, on shift today .... getting a few things done. Got some servo savers, my other pair of wheels, lots of misc. hardware. This thing is coming together, major components left to get:
all the internals of the front axle
front bumper
batterey charger (sold mine on E-bay lol)
... and that pretty much it!! another month or two and i will be crawling

More pics, Made a Battery mount last night, thin sheet steel box bent up and soldered on the corners and a notch for the battery wires. Fits perfect, velcro straps will hold the batt down.

Wish I could take credit for those axles .... they are G-made, I got them from junfac.com. EXPENSIVE .... you have to buy all the parts seperate, totals about $277 for two complete axles. I have some CAD experience and was toying with the idea of designing some axles specificly for crawling.

Just picked up some integy pro lathes, went with the 65t b/c i was tired of waiting on the 55's

Axial beadlocks on the way

Moped VR16 on the way also.

Thanks for all the compliments, this is my first ever crawler, lots of room for improvment though.

Looking good fire boy!

I have a couple questions

why do you have your servo linkage running at a upward angle like that?

Also are you using the gmade diff lockers?
