Say hi to Blue!

Well since coming here and seeing the crawlers and becoming completely addicted to it and needing to have one of my own i decided to build one.
I started with clod axles and fabricated everything i needed as i went. I am happy with the turn out, just need the weather to warm up and dry all the mud and water up for some nice driving.

2 integy 55 turn motors
savage aluminum shocks
custom made aluminum chasis
futaba rx
Novak rooster
40 series wheels
40 series moabs
Hitec steering servos 645
and all the little stuff i had to make along the way

Big thanks to Zoom Room in Newmarket, ON for being so helpful, and my wife for not complaining about living in the garage!

That looks pretty good, man... Looks like ya got a good balance of suspension and links and such... How about a few body off shots, too, so we can check out yer chassis a bit more... It looks pretty good from what you can see of it with the shell on...

backtomyroots 03-19-2007 03:35 PM

Excellent Canadian addition! Need some topless shots though. Nice selection of electronics & gear "thumbsup" .

cloddyman 03-19-2007 04:46 PM

yeah i will get some pics up in a couple hours so you can see the chasis, and thanks so far for the comments!

clodstall 03-19-2007 05:06 PM

can you guys say bling bling?
lookin good so far.

hvydty1 03-19-2007 05:42 PM

Looks sweet. Nicely done. Are you having any trouble with the tires hitting the links at full steer? Looks like you haven't narrowed the rims is why I'm asking. Still looks good. Like the Titan."thumbsup"

cloddyman 03-19-2007 06:19 PM

As for Bling i was kinda hopin it wasnt gonna resemble a rappers crawler, lol, but i think it came out that way, but i sure like the look. secondly the tires dont rub, i actually made my own 1 inch spacers for each side, well actually custom adaptors/spacers to be exact, i just couldnt wait for a set of adapters to be shipped so i fabricated my own hub extensions and hex extensions with the conversion to 14 mm hubs. with this set up the only thing i rub is the body still, even with the bumpers removed, but i aint cuttin no more out, its definitly not a comp crawler so i am gonna keep it looking this way for now, maybe add some rings to the rims if i have the time to make a set.

cloddyman 03-19-2007 06:33 PM

heres a couple other shots for ya, some with out the body too!!!

Wow... Nice chassis... Definately a nice job for a home built chassis... Very nicely engineered with all the extra setup points... Bet it handles rather nice on the rocks...

cloddyman 03-19-2007 09:22 PM

thank you very much for the compliments, i wasnt sure if it would look good enough but i am super happy with how it looks, im probably gonna make a couple more and see if any of my buddys want in on them. They are perfect and square, and the points measure exact. And for the person that will ask how thick the aluminum is its 1/8 inch thick commercial grade aluminum

DaViolentOne 03-19-2007 09:56 PM

I was lookin' a bit more at this pic here:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...t/IM000283.jpg

And had an idea for ya...

The underside of the chassis, could you not machine a piece of Delrin or cutting board to fit in there and run some longer or other screws up thru the told the sides on? That'd add some slippage to the underside of it...

cloddyman 03-20-2007 03:40 PM

yeah i looked at it last night and it looks like it is doable, it is really smooth though, the aluminum is actually almost a polish finish but probably will get scratched up with use. The delrin plate idea is going to have to be worked in there for sure. Im still trying to think of some other ideas to toss into this to make it run bomb proof, so this could still get interesting.

DaViolentOne 03-20-2007 11:22 PM

Well.. Ya got 6 holes for the main attatchments.. Why not put 4 in between those and countersink them in as well... Just drill n tap smaller holes for the skid plate in the chassis as ya did for the main screws...

>shrug< I think that'd be cool...

cloddyman 03-21-2007 08:56 PM

yeah that sounds like a good idea, i just gotta get my hands on some delrin or a cutting board, im gonna hit up the dollar store and see what they got along the lines of cheap cutting boards, and see what i can do with it, its gotta go with the look of the chasis as well, i dont want to just slap something on there and hope it works, i like perfect!!

DaViolentOne 03-21-2007 10:33 PM

1/4" black would look pretty cool... Mebbe angle and round the edges to flow in with the rest of the lines of the chassis, too... Round all the edges... >shrug<

cloddyman 03-22-2007 08:40 PM

Added in a new receiver pack, 1100 mah, way more power than 5 rechargeable AA's. I like it better, much quicker steering response. I still havent gone out to find any thing to skid plate the bottom of the rig yet but its in the works, as soon as i have some free time. Still trying to finish my other projects as well, and im hoping to find somewhere to post my drift car for trade, im not gonna drive it anymore and i know guys on here with multiple trucks so if there is a place in here to post it someone please let me know, other than that i have a tamiya TT-01 for trade, only looking for a crawler in trade so let me know if anyone is interested, thanks

cloddyman 03-23-2007 07:03 PM

ok i still got one question though, does this rig classify as a super class or unlimited class whatever the class is, just curious so i know what i got and i dont mis-call it something and get told that its not what i thought! oh, and it just walks up stairs like they aint no thing, finally had it out today and wow i couldnt believe how easy it just rolled up the stairs, turns out to be a good setup after all.

DaViolentOne 03-24-2007 08:16 AM

I'm not really sure about the classifications, either...;) I don't even know where mine would fit according to the general rules... But when we had a comp. here, anything Clod was stuffed into the unlimited class... There was only 2 classes, really... TLT's and Unlimited... Woulda said Clod, but, there was a TXT in the mix, too, so...

Anyone know where cloddyman's rig and my Gecko II Pro with no 4WS but a D.U.D. would fit?

ILoveRCRockCrawlin 03-24-2007 09:47 AM

Go through the rules in the Competition section. If it doesn't fit in 2.2 or Super Class, then it would be unlimited.

Nice work, btw. The Delrin skid will be a lot better than the aluminum. Rocks can dig into the alum. very easily.

cloddyman 03-24-2007 01:32 PM

thanks for the info, i cant wait to get this thing to some rocks on the riverside nearby but i gotta wait for some dry weather, any other ideas for possible improvements i am all ears, but like i said so far it is very capable so im happy with what it can do.
