Testing of Pinions/Motor combinations

I just got a 10T Cobalt Puller from another member, and when i was the process of putting on the stock 20T pinion, i lost the stinking grub screw. Gives me an excuse to go try out different pinions.

From various threads I have read, with the cobalt puller and even the 35T handwounds from HH, i can stick with a higher tooth pinion without sacrificing torque. I have also read that if i go with a lower tooth, i will not be sacrifcing wheel speed.

What are other people running with their cobalt or 35T handwound? I am curious 'cause just like most people i want the torque for crawling but then wheelspeed for some bashing fun. I was planning on ordering one of the parts number below from robinson for some trial error to see what i like.

Part #1050 16T, 18T, 20T, 22T, 24T and 26T Pinions $14.95
Part #1055 15T, 17T, 19T, 21T, 23T and 25T Pinions$14.95

So no one has put a cobalt or a 35T holmes hobbies handwound on their CR01?

or should I move my thread to the newbie section instead since this question is not necessarily specific to the CR01?

Beets me, but if you try the 35T hand wound post up, I'm looking at one for my CR01.

Hi All,

I bought 12-24T pinions (evens) to play with what i like...not the parts I mentioned above because those ones are not metric. I am planning on testing each pinion on different motors that I currently have (10T cobalt puller, 35T handwound torquemaster (from holmes), and the stock CR01 motor...and if i am able to get the 7T cobalt). Because of the many different combinations, this is going to take me a while.

I dont have a dyno, but i wanted to do a "real world" testing while mounted on my CR01. I am going to test speed and torque.

Before I do any more testing...My question for you guys is: how do i test the torque? What I have done so far is put dead weight in an empty laundry basket and have the CR01 try and pull it. I considered it "pulled" if the basket moved 5ft. Any other way to do it?

FYI...on 3S 15C 2100mah lipo

Torque: on stock 20T pinion
the stock can pulled 22 pounds
the 35T pulled 29 pounds
ran out of time last night to do the puller

Speed: on stock 20T pinion
stock can is about 8.1mph
35T is about 6.1mph
10T is about 5.8mph

I will post up all my results and details of what i did when I am done. Man this is gonna take a while!

Well I bought a 35T TorqueMaster from Holmes. I installed it with the 20T pinion and will see where to go from there, although I'm still a little ways from running it. The 20T should have some good wheel speed.

On my rig with a 3S lipo, the 35T torquemaster was a hair faster than the 10T puller. The stock CR01 was way faster than both motors (but less torque). However, the stock CR01 motor is not supposed to be ran with a 3S.

Anyone else have experience with different motors and pinion combos? Post up your experience.

just tried to do the torque test on the 10T cobalt puller. the two rear wheel hexes (plastic) stripped. Not sure if it was the cobalt or if it was due to the stress from the torque testing i had done already with the other two motors.

Anyone have spare hexes! LOL!!
