Default how much can the CR-01 drive train hold?

Hey guys I want to make a rock racer/go fun rc. Prolly be on a 35T motor with a side winder ESC on a 3S lipo. Can the CR-01 drive train hold that? I know the SCX can but IMO the CR-01 is way cooler and I like the tamiya kits I put together in the past. Thanks guys!

Just upgrade the driveshafts to steel and it will be pretty bulletproof

rc4wd punisher shafts would be an excellent upgrade and will hold up to anything up can put to them. bit pricey though

GPM shafts are a well built, cheaper steel option.

Junfac shafts are about $30 for the pair

JunFac are the best ones I've found for the CR-01.

3Racing ones are alright, but ugly blue.

Avoid the following:

RC4WD Punishers. Very solid, and I'm sure they're good for long-reach crawlers, but the design means they bind easily on shorter rigs like the CR-01.

HotRacing ones. They require a very small allen key which strips easily rendering the shafts useless.

those are also good options but another would be traxxas metal yokes and a 6 pack of shafts
and i have punishers on my cr01 and have had no binding issues with them ever

just my 2cents...

it is better to snap the drive shafts because they are plastic
rather than
breaking/stripping the gears inside the axles because the steel shafts were stronger than gears

much easier to replace the drive shafts than breaking open the axles to replace the gears.

i run HH7T cobalt puller with 3S and have not snapped a traxxas stampede shaft yet. i easily snapped the stock CR01 drive shafts on the stock motor with 3S (and I burned up the stock can too because of the 3S!!).

Center drivelines for a tmaxx are 5mm. Little work and they are a great plastic upgrade and cheap. More than a year and I'm still on my first set.

thanks for all the different options guys! I can get t-maxx shafts for cheap, but may just get Junfac and be done with it.

If you can strip a gear inside the axle, you're the man, because those are metal.

I'm torn between Tamiya metal shafts and Junfac

according to other posts, there have been people that have done that (stripped/broke a gear in the axle). whatever is the weakest link can break...whether it be the plastic gearing in the planetary tranny hub, plastic yokes, or something else on the plastic axle. Me personally, i would rather change the drive shaft than any other part connected to the drive shaft. with that said, i have never broken a drive shaft once i had upgraded to the traxxas stampede drive shafts (still plastic).

like i said this is just my 2-cents and to give the OP something else to think about. to each his own and do what u want on your rig.

drive shafts

i think Eepee said it much better than i...

I started with the Traxxis units, great but not as photogenic (i thought) s the the 3racing units.

3racing were next But spat a yoke pin on the front just wheelin', second charge of teh pack. So it was traxxis and 3 for a bit.

Then traxxis started spinning the pins out of the plastic yoke on the tranny side so I upgraded both ends to GPM all steel shafts.

These are great, to date. (They look cool in pics too )

I will probably end up breaking something internal as Eepee suggests, but so far all is good.

The original drive shafts take quite a beating.
With a 35t-motor and a set of wheels weighting 2lbs I have yet to break one while bashing or crawling.
