CR01 Custom chassis build
 

CR01 #2...before. Mostly stock set-up with a few aluminum bits.

Decided to try a few things. Set-up on this jeep was always a bit iffy - it was very top heavy and tended to get high centered very easily. Meh. Let's see what we can do.

New chassis design. Relocated the center tranny up 1 inch. TVP works fine for this chassis, despite the goofy chassis set-up, the trans mount, electronics tray, bumpers, etc are the same width.

The 3Racing trans mount had a bunch of ridges on it and got hung up pretty much everywhere. Rather than toss it, I got out the angle grinder and removed the ridges. :)

Suspension geometry was way different with the new chassis, so I had to mod the link mounts quite a bit to get it all to work. Relocated the links from under the axles to off to the side. Ditched the spring set-up unfortunately, didn't quite work out with the new geometry.

New chassis layout. Used the stock radio plate for the electronics, and modded the old trans mount and put it in front for the battery.

New stance....even with the smaller 2.2's, I have more GC than before.

Set up with a set of narrowd TRX rims and an old set of HPI geolanders. Won't really be able to stuff much bigger tires under there, the short WB and link set-up just won't work out. Very easy to swap over to 1.9's though should I ever decide to. Like it just like this though, I've had these tires forever - nice to finally put them to use somewhere

Have a set of junfac shocks in droop mode to go on here eventually, whenever I get them built. Should lower it down quite a bit. Seems like it's a bit tall at the moment.

Great looking rig mate. Jeep body suits it well.

Thank you sir, looks better now, added the Junfac shocks and it's sitting much lower. Still not sold 100% on the wheels though. Look like 22's!

Much better, got the G-Transitions on (in droop) and swapped the hokey 2.2's for 1.9 weighted Titus's...look good with the body due to the deeper offset. Even with the 1.9's, outperformed a stock CR, no question. Pokey slow with a 65t motor though.

My new go to 1.9 rig....pretty much goes where it's pointed. Very happy with how it came out.

Changed to a Holmes Revolver, Axial trans (had to, the stock trans output was too long and led to driveshaft binding) 1.9 TSL XL's, and a few other odds and ends. Just needs a few body tweaks and some sliders, and think this one's about done.

and big brother got some love too....too many mods to run though. :) Very solid and predictable driver, was very impressed on the first run out.

From a jeep to a bug...Jeep body had taking a beating, so it was time for something new. Well, sorta...had this laying around from my old "Blitzer Beetle Rustler" and it fit pretty good. Had to add some new rear links, and everything fell into place. Finally added some much needed sliders as well (stock axial take-offs) and put the old front bumper in the rear - looked a little empty back there. Wheels are weighted 3/1oz F/R, and kept it all in the family with a set of Tamiya tires. Won't stay probably....but wanted to stay around 4.5 inches on the tires for clearance purposes.

Was thinking about attaching Axial sliders for a while but wasn't sure of it would work. Where do you attach them, on the frame rails or the CR side plates?


Edit: I just realized that's a narrowed CR front bumper in the rear haha

Mine are mounted on the lowest point of the side plates - or, where they would be on a stock chassis. The screws that hold on the lower links also hold the sliders...I had to rotate the slider mounts a bit, narrow the sliders, and re-drill the pins at an angle. I can get a pic if it would help, not sure I'm explaining that well.

Rear bumper is perfect! Can sit at about 80 degrees on the tail. Should help with rolling over backwards.

I was wondering how wide is the axle from hex to hex?

8" according to a 2 second google search.

The axle is 8"

OSRC, any chance you can take a side picture of your Bug without the body on? I'm drawing up my aluminum to be cut and am curious as to your upper arm location to the axles. I think I can see everything, but want to make sure before I start to cut... I only have enough of of this gauge aluminum for 2 rails!
