| New to crawling need advice
Hello all, I am new to crawling but not new to radio controlled toys I have planes but I recently bough an old tamiya cr-01 crawler it's about 4-5 years old but it was never really used! It came with 3 7.2v 1500 mah nicd batteries that are useless by now, a futaba t2ph radio and whatever receiver came with it back then! I want to update it make it reliable and something worth crawling with any help or pointers will be much appreciated I'm new so I know nothing bout crawling! The crawler is all bone stock nothing had been changed but a proline jeep body! I would like to be able to use it with my spectrum dx7s radio if it's possible! Thanks for any info you can give me!

The cr-01 isn't the most capable crawler but one of the best trail rigs imo. I'd recommend a holmes hobbies brushed esc and 35t motor. After that, a good 300+ oz servo and some tires. I run 2.2 Mudslingers on mine. |

What are you planning on doing with it? Also another thing to consider is switching to lithium polymer batteries.

definitely get your Spektrum working in it and get some new batteries. There are some threads in this forum with the little tricks for the CR to get it in line. Keep checking them out, its a fun rig for light crawling and trail runs

I'm not sure which model of axial esc I'm running but it has a drag break, I'm running a 35t lathe motor. I am also running a 4200mah 2s lithium polymer battery and I get about an hour of run time depending on how hard I am on it.

The truck is already pretty reliable, just swap in some steel driveshafts, I put the Tamiya steel propeller shafts in. Also I get easily over an hour use. 3600mah Trakpower Dark Series lipo battery and also I use a 4200mah Zippy Flightmax lipo. Sometimes I wish the battery would die sooner as its getting cold out or whatever |

The main mods I've done to mine are, better tyres with plenty of weight around the wheels and the short spring set. The springs are softer and they lower the centre of gravity. You'll find the cr01 a little bit top heavy. Fantastic rig though, I have loads of fun with mine. |

I've seen where a lot of people get rid of the stock shock set up and use just a regular shock is it as simple as takin the whole cantilever setup out and jus bolting the new shock in place or is there more to it?

I think it's a fairly straightforward swap. I'm still running it on mine. Seems to work fine for me. |

Welcome to the CR01 Tnc89. It is a nice rig and pretty capable with a few mods. It's biggest downfall in my opinion is it's turning radius as compared to the SCX10 for example. I've changed my drive shafts, installed a high torque servo, installed the barrel springs, and lipo batteries. I use the Holmes Hobbies BRXL speed control with a Tekin 35T motor. |

Short barrel springs and zip tied cantilever links are key for the stock suspension. Those two things made the biggest improvement. Medium (yellow markings) springs up front and hard (blue) in back I also run the thinnest torsion bar in front and medium in back. The whole truck is less sloppy and loose feeling with this set up. These The cantilever arms have a slight play between them which makes the chassis and the axles move independently without damping from the shocks. Makes the body look really wobbly when you go over bumps or climb. Zip tying the cantilever arms removes that play and allows the shocks to function as they should against obstacles Search ziptie cantilevers on here and there are a few thread about it. I'll take a upclose pic of it if you want to see Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk |
