been away from crawling for a few years

hey guys, its been a long time since I have been on here or crawling at all. I used to run a highly modified tlt and txt-1 and a 2.2 clod stick chassis. but cause of real life things and money problems I had to leave crawling. I just ordered a CR-O1 and am expecting it to get here this Tuesday. cant wait to get back into crawling. but I have a lot of questions trying to get caught up wit all the changes. like I use to run a plane gear reduction on my tlt with a traxxas trans with a 55t brushed motor and a 16 tooth pinion. is that still a good way to slow down a rig and can you still find those items? keep in mind I don't have the money like I did before so I want to find the most cost effective way to get the CR-O1 slowed down for some real crawling with keeping it to a scale trail rig. I don't know if the stock gear box of the rig would even work with a gear reduction or if there is even enough space for one. but here is a link to a write up I did on dig for a txt years ago if anyone wants to see one of my old rigs Dig For TXT/Jugg How to.

Sounds great But I'm just curious, if you want cost effective scale, why did you choose to go for the cr01? Wouldn't a scx10 be a way, way more obvious choice? I'm just asking because I have been looking at the cr01 myself, but I'm unsure about the advantages.

I love to mod my rigs. I like to make my own parts when I can. it keeps the cost down and I can be proud of my rig when it crawls really well. so the idea of getting an ok rig that has a lot of mod possibilities really got my attention. the scx10 is already a real good rig and there is no real reason to mod it. so to me it seemed the CR-O1 was the better choice for me. but it is really disappointing to see that most of the after market parts for the CR-O1 have been discontinued. I have been reading posts back to 2013 on here and have tried to see how much a lot of the hop-ups cost for it and it seems all of the parts are no longer available. oh well, it just means I'll have more parts Ill have to make for the rig to make it crawl better and still look scale.

Most of the hop up parts that were available don't really help performance, most are for show. No big loss. The CR01 is perfect for customizing, I've got 4 in various guises. Swapping over to stand up shocks and a new set of tires makes a huge difference - best bolt-ons in my book.

It comes with a planetary transmission - pretty unique among crawlers. A bit big, but super strong. A 17-19t pinion will gear it down plenty with the stock motor. If you really like to creep along, go with a 16-17t in that range.

Thank you OSRC. The info on the pinions will be a huge help. Keeps me from guessing on what pinion to run.
I should be getting my rig tomorrow and plan to build it totally stock. But that will most likely only last for one trial run. I will post pics of my build but it mite be slow depending on how busy work keeps me.

well I know its been a while but sadly work has been keeping me busy till a few days ago. But I got my truck and finally got time to change the shock set up out and play with the link placement some.

Sometimes with Tamiya you have to go overseas unless you find a set on Ebay. Asiatees has KM and 3Racing in stock. The KM parts are excellent.
