RCP Crawlers copper alloy locker failure So I just got my new 2/3a cell pacl setup and went out to see how the rig went--all of a sudden I lost power to a front wheel--it just spun like the shaft was broken down in the housing... so once again I rip the thing apart and low and behold---the splines on the locker as no longer there(short shaft side). The axle looks ok and the splines are still good and sharp and not rolled over (like the stock ring gear will do). So has anybody else had this failure? The dang thing is only a tad over a month old...:-( So time to toss a stock spare back into it so--I can go play some more. |
I haven't had any issues like that, Mike. I finally blew up a pinion, but I have been running it since last June. The ringgears(lockers) are still in great shape. You hard on your junk or what:lol::lol: |
I'd email RCP they have had other resent failures on a batch, mine have also run problem free since mid summer 2007...."thumbsup" |

I just had the same thing happen this weekend. Only a few runs on this crawler and the short shaft side of the locker splines are gone. I noticed also that my CVD shaft is slightly damaged....the hole where the pin goes through the cup is broken and open a bit. Also, I tried reinstalling the stock ring gear that I had (locked with JB) and the pinion seems too deep for the ring gear. Anyone else have trouble with this? (BTW, I am using no spacer behind the RPC pinion gear) |
I don't think you are going to be able to mix and match the RCP R&P's with the stock stuff. The teeth look like they have different depths to them. I just broke the teeth on my 2nd pinion but I'm going to have to blame it on myself for putting too much power through it. The ring gear has plenty of beef but the pinion teeth are a little brittle. It's just a matter of finding the happy medium since the stock ones are too soft. If it wasn't for these I wouldn't be able to crawl for more then 10 seconds |
That is what I figured. The teeth on both look quite a bit deeper than stock. I hope this was just a one time failure for mine. This crawler doesnt have a ridiculous amount of torque (65T motor with 17T pinion and 87T spur). |
I have used the lockers with the stock pinions with no issues, I haven't tried it the other way around yet. |
No that never happens. You must drive like a madman:lol::roll: I stripped 1 diff of the splines and 2 of my friends stripped the splines. We also broke pinions before they were SS continualy either at the hole or the teeth. You own TLT axles the stuff will break. Dont take this the wrong way but if your going to run it hard and dont want it to break get rid of the TLT axle's. I went to other axles some time ago and almost never touch my axles now. Dont get me wrong nothing at all wrong with TLT axles but there are stronger alternatives out there if you have constant breakage problems. |
Well, I understand stuff will break....my concern was that this part blew out faster than the stock part. I want to know if this was a design flaw and has since been fixed, or if this is just the nature of this product. If the latter, then I'll stick with the stock ring gear. |
